Pre-race routine:

Got up at my usual 5:15 to maintain weekday pattern. Cereal and coffee. Started a water bottle on the drive up. Got to Alton bay right @ 8 AM. Had a gu with the water on the way up. Ended up drinking two water bottles on the way up. Changed in the car, and went in to the gym to get my stuff. Had to ask someone to read my number as I left my glasses in the car. Collected the bag and pinned my rae number. Temp was just under 50 degrees and moderate rain to start. Wore a cotton long sleeve T shirt with mt NHAA siglet over it. Wore my "race" shorts. Wore my new(2 weeks) Brooks Adreneline's. Took a pepcid AC in the AM.
Event warmup:

Jogged a bit getting to the starting line. Tennis courts near the start - did some quick repeats to get the blood flowing. It was chilly, but glad I didn't wear anything extra.

Comments:

Good run. Pretty even splits. Started out a tad ahead of pace for miles 1 and 2. miles 3-6 pretty much gradual uphill so I fell behind pace by a little. Made it up coming over the crest as I passed someone who had struggled a bit up the hill. Put it in cruise control and felt good through the halfway point. The back half was winding and little rollers. It messed with my form vs the nice straight rt 11. Grabbed waters at most of the stops and had just a swig each time. Grabbed a CarBoom as it was offered around mile 7. Didn't have any water, so I carried it a couple miles until next water stop and got maybe half of it down and half on my face/hands :-) Finished really strong because someone 9jeremy powers?) had gaied on me and was right on my heals the last 4 miles or so. he kept pushing, and I kept battling him off. Made for my strong finish. Actually caught the guy I had been sighting far far away the whole race, and almost caught wayne.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster :-)
Post race
Warm down:

Wet, cold, windy. Really crappy weather. Grabbed some pizza, a banana, a cookie and some gatorade. Joe and Wayne got a massage, but i wasn't up for it. Took the bus back to the school ,ad changes into some dry clothes in the car. I was freezing by the time I got back there.. Car heat was welcome releif.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Non Kenyan heritage.

Event comments:

Despite crappy weather, the race was the most fun I've run. Tons of volunteers, music throughout - themed aid stations. Lots of great food post race - Very well organized. Only hitch was picking up bags after race - they had a hard time finding the numbered bags... Pretty tall order with 1300 people but...This was an A+ race!

damn you're fast!  Too bad you didn't hook up with Max at the race.  Glad to hear everything went well today despite the nasty weather.  Congrats on a great race

Great race!  How did you like that steep sandy downhill at the beginning of the return section on the back road?  Man that was hairy running down that at full speed!

Man, you just need to get out there and train. Then you would be able to run a 10k faster than 1:21.

Oh, wait, you mean that was a half marathon ..... in 1:21 .... seriously ....

In all seriousness, fantastic run!!! Great job!

Fasst run under not so great conditions! I was a little surprised at how hilly it was until I looked at the elevation profile after coming home. I agree w/ you that it was a great race.

Non Kenyan heritage, HA! I think you may actually have a Kenyan in your lineage afterall...with a finish time like that, better double check. Hope you are basking in the glory of it all day!

Thanks, TriMom!

Yeah, I was on the lookout for Max's domeLaughing, but never spotted it.  I actually approached one guy to say hi, but realized it wasn't him a few feet away.  (Didn't have my glasses on)  Thanks!

Heh!  Yup, that was a bit hairy!  I don't know about you, but I had the hardest time maintaining any kind of decent form/pace through all those little hills.  I didn't realize it was going to be like that.  It was amost like two different races.  Thanks, again, Max.  We'll meet at one of these several races we have in common this year....

LOL!  Thanks, Rick!  Now, if you could just show me how to ride a bike, and I could learn how to swim decently....Then, we might have something!Wink
