I was little surprise how well my legs took the pounding and kept on ticking in the last half-marathon. I've been training on the treadmill for 90% of the time this winter. The longest run was 10 miles. Yeah running hard and sweating in one spot. It's doggone boring.

I believe that running on treadmill is saving my body and joints from all that pounding from pavement. I'm planning on using it more to put on more milage like 30-40 miles per week. I'm planning on doing TC Marathon this fall.

I'm now believer in treadmill. Laughing

It does get extremely boring though. I would much rather be outside but have gotten in the habit of running on the treadmill also. I swore I wouldn't do anything over 10 miles on the treadmill and yet I did 11 last week and 12 this week on it. It just makes logistics easier with water stops and getting dressed right. I hit 14 and 15 miles over the next 3 weeks and have no intention of being on the hamster wheel for those. You may be right about it saving the legs some, but we also need to have those same legs conditioned for outdoors also. Have you tried trail running to help alleviate some of the pounding?

Have not done trail running but I'll try and see if it helps the body.

Some of my fast hardcore racing friends in the 80's and 90's are done running completely.
They have problem in the knee, hip, or ankle joints.
Now they're doing more bike road and track racing.

For me, life is too short for treadmill running if running outside is possible.

I agree the treadmill is not much fun compared to running outside.  I have run nearly all my winter miles on a treadmill.  What I have found is that listening to an audio book is a great way to pass the time.  Feed your mind while you train your body.

Absolutely!

Me three, not to mention we've been incredibly lucky with snow/ice this year.  I felt running outside wasn't often possible last year (too much ice) so I am living it up!

I have had only 1 treadmill run this winter.  As Emily points out, it is the ice (running surface) that is key for winter running.  The treadmill may be a little easier on your body than pavement but running either way is still putting a lot of stress on your joints and support system.  Smartly training your body to run consistently and then longer distances is the best answer for reducing the impact of running.

Sorry the late post.

I too have taken advantage of the very mild winter. I vowed to not run on the treadmill this year and I have only done it once. I upgraded my winter clothes and have easily put in 5 miles or more in 6 above temps.

The one time I did a treadmill even with television and music I was bored, I didn't go anywhere. Plus after hurting my ankle last august on a treadmill when my foot slipped to the side I said it's not worth it. It seem to have help as my legs have gotten used to the pounding of the pavement and I think it helps hitting the long straight roads to overcome the part boredom of mile and mile.

My 1.5 cents (.5 off for being late to the conversation)
