Subject: Bike repair stand

I'm looking for a good bike repair stand. I don't want to spend a fortune but I'm willing to buy one that will last and is sturdy.

What features should I look for?

  • Tool tray?
  • Clamp big enough for aero seat post?
  • Height adjustments?
  • Folds up?
  • others?

Tell me about your first hand knowledge of a bike repair stand.

Thank you.

If you have a workbench with some room, you can make this: http://www.instructables.com/id/PVC-Bench-top-Bike-Repair-Stand/step3/Assemble/  I made my own work bench and had room. Someone next door was throwing away old under the counter cabinets so I grabbed them and threw them under the bench for drawers and storage. It cost me about 15 bucks to make and does the job.

I recently bought this and I'm very happy.

I've always wanted a bike shop style workstand that clamps the bike and is easy-in, easy-out, stable, rotates...

But the problem is that clamps just don't cover all bikes.  There are carbon frames with weird shaped seat tubes, top tubes, and carbon, aero seat posts.  Where do you clamp that without risking damage?

So unfortunately, a stand like this is called for.  Even though removal of the wheel is required it's the only stand that guarantees a good mounting for road, tri, mtn bikes of all types.

It's surprisingly sturdy.  Much stronger than I expected.  It folds pretty well so you can carry it places in your car with ease.

I guess I'd have to say that I'm thrilled with it.

I've used the basic Park home repair stand (PSC-10 maybe?) since I was in college.  Thing has lasted me over 15 years so far. That said, I have yet to put my Cervelo on it since I've bought it.... not sure how to clamp it with the aero seat tube.  Is there some kind of adapter out there?

This is what I use and absolutely love it. Completely adjustable.

I do my bike cleaning/minor repairs with my bike mounted on my hitch rack - which for me is better than having another piece of equipment cluttering up the garage.

I like stands like Park PRS 20 (?) or the one that JeffY mentions, where you have to take the front wheel off, but you don't have to worry as much about clamps etc.

For me this is especially important when working on carbon tri bike with odd seat post, but it also works great for roadie, wife's beach cruiser, kids bikes etc.

My bike stand I put a piece of pipe insulation around my bike frame where I'm going to clamp it on.

I find my bike is more steady on my Thule bike rack.

In the summer if my bike rack is on, I typically clean my bike on the bike rack instead of bike stand.

I have this one too and am annoyed that I can't clamp it on my carbon, non-circular shaped seat post or top tube...  I usually just rest my seat on top of the clamp and it's super unstable. grrr.  I'm also interested if there are any adaptors out there...

You are awesome for posting this! I've wanted a repair stand for years, but just could never spend the money on it.  This idea is fantastic!

I bought this for the fiance's birthday last year.  Got a nice little discount through our local Trek store. It folds up and easily stores flat or upright. It's very sturdy and he keeps his tools in a cabinet.

He has enjoyed it so far and I used it recently to add the sweet new upgrades he bought for my bike for Christmas.

I have this one. I picked it up as an impulse at an REI garage sale even though I already had a stand. This was much better. Folds nicely for storage or to take my mobile bike shop to a friend's house for post ride cleaning, or to work on bikes. The optional tray is also very nice, with room for tools, a coffee cup, and a well to keep degreaser for deep cleaning and soaking when needed. Just to complete the set, I also have a trueing clamp that fits on the stand, but I really only use that when I am doing repairs on the road.
