Age Group Rank = 27/45
Pre-race routine:

Drove out to St George Utah with Derreck and Annie. We cruised down exploration memory lane across highway 50 saw an antelope and Derreck said it was a good omen, then we run into the nevada Passage adventure series reality tv show people. They were happy to see us and almost got us to be volunteers and hand out water. we hit the road. We got in to st george that evening and saw my parents, who became our fabulour roadies. We went Friday to the reservoir and met some nice ladies from salt lake - my mom leant some flip flops to one of the - I don;'t mind sharing our roadies. we swam out to the rocks a couple times and chatted.... I coulda stayed all day - I feel like a porpoise. Maybe in a past life I was a porpoise.

Event warmup:

ate a tone of pasta the night before. woke up, drank coffee with Annie. Ate some granola and bread with pb. drove out to race site.
Swim
  • 18m 22s
  • 766 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Keep away from the clydes
Transition 1
  • 07m 22s
Comments:

"strippers" just out of water got me half way - then I ran up forever with Derreck taking a million photos - not a pretty site in my ugly bra.... need cuter bra.
What would you do differently?:

The lady in the transition zone next to me was very slow and meticulous, I lost momentum....
Bike
  • 1h 05m 27s
  • 14 miles
  • 12.83 mile/hr
Comments:

choked on the hill - should have just kept it in low and kept going.
What would you do differently?:

Not jump off and walk....
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Run
  • 51m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 16m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

I was more afraid of falling than going slow - so I walked 90% of it. Walked with a lady who had been pulled out of the water from panic but got back on her bike to do her best. She was bleeding on the run from a fall on the bike - you go, girl!
Whenever the course veared near the parking lot, there was Derreck with the camera. As I rounded the last corners I hear something.... "GO GO Go - Allez allez allex" there is Derreck standing on a big rock shouting out "Cup of Life" (theme song for the World Cup Soccar a few years ago.... People looking around trying to figure out who this brown man is singing to - yep, I am married to Ricky Martin....
What would you do differently?:

should have had a goo shot at T2
Post race
Warm down:

pounded the water. ate some fruit. found family. Went and camped for 3 days in Zion and then spent 2 nights in Las Vegas.... Had the best message of my life at the spa in the Sahara hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was truly undertrained.

Event comments:

Very sad to hear that someone died during the swim. http://www.christophereborn.com/

Everyone should take their parents to a tri - bring the motor home too! Great to have one's own "piddleatorium"
Train more for next time...

Performance:
Suit: sleeveless
Course: waited around a long time - not enough volunteers so we waited.... Annie went and stole water and juice from my roadie mobile. finally got going. The clydesdales were in the same heat with the old ladies. I got in the water and lined up.... booom! I took off and fell in with a herd of clydsedales. This is just not right - these big dudes in my way! Derreck watched through his binoculars and said it was like I was swimming with a couple of wilderbeasts cutting me off - every time these two guys drifted apart I would try to sprint through them but they would put a clampin on me and cut me off! Finally got out of the water and ran FOR-EV-ER up a hill.

Congratulations on your tri!  I really enjoyed your race report (esp. the comment about the bra.    ).  Sounds like you had great trip.  Must have been so much fun to have your family there with you.

Well, if a not cute enough bra was the worst part, you're doing pretty well! Way to go, Mary, incredible race! Sounds really tough. Where was it located, since I was just there the week before... and was it off-road?

The bike was on road but the run was off road - a geologist run, I would call it - sand, rock, pediment, drainages....

Sand Hollow State Park to the south of St George and Hurricane.
