Pennsylvania’s new bike safety law to take effect April 2

The new law requires motorists to leave a 4-foot “cushion of safety” when passing a bicyclist. To achieve this cushion, drivers may cross a roadway’s center line when passing a bicycle on the left, but only when opposing traffic allows.
Drivers attempting to turn left must also yield the right of way to bicycle riders traveling in the opposite direction.

“The differential in speed is the biggest safety challenge with motor vehicles and bicycles sharing our state’s roadways,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “I urge all drivers and cyclists to learn the rules of the road to better share our highways and make travel safer for all.”

The new law also calls for bicycle riders to use all reasonable efforts to avoid impeding the normal flow of traffic. When there is only one travel lane, bicyclists may use any portion of the lane to avoid hazards on the roadway, including maintaining a safe distance from stopped and parked cars.

Bicyclists and motorists are reminded to obey all traffic signs and signals. PennDOT also recommends bicyclists always ride predictably and signal their intentions before proceeding so that motorists have a chance to react.

I wish they'd pass a law like this in New York.

Great law, but now how does the message get out to drivers?

This part makes me nervous. I hate it when cars cross a double yellow to pass me, especially on an incline. What's the first thing they are going to do when they suddenly see oncoming traffic?

Agree it's a good law but pretty hard to enforce.

Personally I would like the law to have the motorist slow down when passing a bike as opposed to crossing the yellow line. I would gladly give up a foot or two as long as the car is going slower. I get just as nervous when I see a car maintain, or increase speed, and cross the yellow line to pass me.

we had the 3 foot version of this in Louisiana.  In speaking to the troops down there (and letting them know to look it up) they'd never enforce it, but when the 80 yr old mowed down a cyclist on the shoulder, that's what they were able to charge her with.  A nice fine of $25 to $250.

At least now the officer can give the motorist a ticket when they run you over, because then they were within 4 feet...

I agree with a couple of the other posters with people flying and crossing the yellow line - when they hit those new "rumble patches" on the lines it scares the crap out of me. I make sure to give bikers space and respect the speed difference as best I can, and hope my fellow motorists will learn from my example and do the same for me when I'm on the road.

BrianRunsPhilly - 2012-03-30 9:14 AM Great law, but now how does the message get out to drivers?

I was sitting at a light when a cyclist buzzed my door yesterday.  He had to be just a couple feet away because he lifted his arm to avoid my mirror.  I guess I was sitting still, breaking the law?

Shouldn't cyclist have to stay 4ft away from me too?

Note: I am a cyclist, motorcyclist, and motorist.  Stupid knows no single mode of transportation.  Laughing
