I call this two words... Tapering Madness. I saw this during my marathons and tris.  You don't think rational during this period.  I've heard people try to squeze in extra long runs, then get hurt.  Fitness Marketers love people with Tapering Madness, this is the reason why most race expoises are few days before the race... people will buy tons of stuff they don't need or buy stuff to use in the race but never in training.  Signs of Tapering Madness:  being worried/excited/under estimating gear/training/fitness/body weight/nutrition/etc, talking to others about everything about the race/training/worries/excitment/gear..

I think people go through it the worst during the first big time event or an event that will be a challenge for them. Best advice, recongize you are going through tapering madness, have faith in your training, have faith in your gear, have faith in your race plan, have faith in your nutrition plan, and whatever happens you will adapt and over come.

Gotta say that you just made me laugh because you just described me perfectly right now!  I want to go do a long workout bad, but keep telling myself that would be a dumb move.  At least now I have a name to put with what I'm feeling, lol.

I don't understand the nervousness for an AG race.

is it fear of failure? fear of disappointing someone/yourself ? fear of DNF ?

There is a difference in the value of the AG/Elite Amateur over the Pro race?  Those races are just as competitive as the pro races with plenty on the line.  You think athletes racing for a World's slot or podium places care any less about their performance and the work they have put into their preparation then the pros?

yep..you have sponsors!

You do realize that a significant number of AG'ers at all levels are sponsored?  Often times with better deals then many pros receive.

Kinda on topic, but I don't mean to hijack the thread,

Does anybody have "race dreams"?  My first race is a month away and I've had more than one dream where I botched my transitions.

I had them constantly leading up to my IM.  And all of them involved screwing up one way or another.  One involved me thinking I would just finish up the next day...low and behold I found out there is no next day.  One involved me oversleeping.  Never had one with me having a great race though....

true..so include AG'ers that are sponsored. Other than that, I still don't understand the nervousness. Just asking question of why "we" do feel nervous.

It's normal for me... I still get nervous.  I used to get nervous before other sports stuff too, but once it starts or I get around the start I get into a zone of comfort.  I LOVE competing.

If im ever not nervous then i prob am too confident and will prob have a chance of not sticking with my plan. I think the nervousness keeps me grounded and in check.... Im always nervous before races no matter what the distance. Its not a matter of being scared but knowing enough to where you know what "can" go wrong and usually in long course racing you will be faced with something you didnt plan for and how you deal with it may determine the outcome of your race.......there is no magical answer of "why" we are nervous...everyone gets nervous for different reasons....Trust your training and enjoy the taper period......and, YES!! it is quite alright to be nervous....Jb

Nightmares that I woke up late. It's good to visualize the whole race beforehand including transitions so you can make a checklist of what to pack. That feeling before.a.race is.precious, it's a natural rush ! Last time before the swim I bet my heart was going 130 bpm just standing there. I grinned and felt alive! OP you're brave to do a HIM as your first race. Good luck

really, you don't get it even just a little bit? forget even the sponsor angle. a lot of AGers that do these races have a motive beyond money why they do these things. many do it for health. many do it for a measure of themselves and what they can still accomplish physically and mentally with their life. the time they have put in of themselves beyond their days jobs, their family...its worth something to them beyond money. they've sacrificed time to be with family, friends, etc, for this. they have a goal in mind, and they want to achieve it/exceed it. it is the culmination of hours/weeks/months of training for this one day.

i'm actually sorry you don't get that feeling.

I get nervous before every single race.  It's normal.  What I find helps is sitting down and visualizing my race - my pace, the course, transitions, my heart rate ... I have the race played out a thousand times in my mind.  When race day comes I just try to play-back that film that I've seen in my head so many times.

I have done good training, I feel 100% injury free, I feel strong, and I feel very healthy.

Dude, do you realize how many people on BT wish they could say that? Go out there, kick some butt, have a blast, and then do it all again!!
