Overall Rank = 15/238
Age Group = M55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/9
Pre-race routine:

Left a little later than I planned. I did swap out my race wheels for stock wheels based on looking at the weather, winds from E 20-22. Plus the cold and rain and I'm not ready to ride my disc in these type of conditions. I will take care of the windy part in training, not sure about the cold & wet.
Honey Nut Cheerios and a banana, my traditional race morning breakfast.
Event warmup:

Short spin on bike and short run & potty break. I really did not have as much time as I would normally like.
Run
  • 13m 49s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I had some troubles getting the Garmin started cause of my gloves. The times on the Final Stretch results don't add up plus they did not include and transition times. For 1.81 I averaged 6:36 on the Garmin
What would you do differently?:

Check out Garmin, this is my new 910 and 1st multi-sport event. It stayed in run mode the whole race.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

A little trouble getting bike shoes on due to gloves but not too bad. I did end up taking off my right glove and had lots trouble getting my fingers in correctly. Also had troubles with my sunglasses. No T times
Bike
  • 41m 16s
  • 14 miles
  • 20.36 mile/hr
Comments:

My Garmin was in run mode so I did not get cadence or speed during the race but I did get mile splits. Need to check out multi-sport mode before next race. Previously mentioned trouble with right glove and sunglasses. Hard to adjust the glasses with gloves on. I passed more people than passed me. According to my calcs I averaged 20.9 for 13.94 miles, better than official results.
Transition 2

Comments:

Good T2, just a little trouble getting one of my shoes on with the gloves on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing here
Run
  • 21m 30s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Moved up 2 spots from 22 to 20 overall so my pacing was decent. I passed a couple of guys early and was passed twice as well. I had a negative split and know I picked up time on the 2nd leg cause there was a bunch of runners not too far behind me at the turnaround. I expected to be faster on both runs with my speed work this spring.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water - all they had. Took bike back to car and changed into warm/dry clothes. Ate a couple of post race hot dogs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I did this race 2 years ago pre-knee surgey and my paces were 6:32 20.0 and 6:44. Using my 2012 calculated paces I was 6:36 (a little short on the distance) 20.9 and 6:56 so a little slower on the run but faster on the bike. No clue on T times, I did not do them well with the Garmin and the results do not have them broken out which probably is why the paces are off some. My overall time was 1:23 faster than 2010. I did not taper much for this one so maybe could have gone a little faster with better rest. Overall I'm pleased with my effort and results, it was a sucky day to race with the cold, wind and rain but good experience racing in these conditions.

I was 9 minutes faster than 2nd in my AG and 2:29 faster than 50-54 AG winner and would have been 3rd in 45-49 AG but 3:08 out of 2nd but I was 4:56 faster than 3rd.

Event comments:

Disappointed there was only water to drink post race, maybe there was HEED but I didn't see any. Lots of volunteers braving the crappy weather. AG prizes were pretty lame, in 2010 I got a hat, this year it a war a cheap running belt wallet which I will never use.

Nice job!  I actually like that Final Stretch changes the prizes, because if you do their races a lot you get some variety. I've gotten a duffel and a nice metal bottle, although once I got one of their cheap drawstring backpacks.  I agree the belt wallet may not get used, only because I have a (nice) one.  You win some you lose some

Anyway, great job considering the weather!  I can't imagine what that rain felt like to you on the bike, it was bad enough at my embarrassing pace.  I am pretty sure the T times are in the runs.
