Subject: Low cost car rentals for one-way trips?!?!?

So hubby, steppie (step-daughter) and I are going to IL in late June (We live in WA)  I thought it would be fun/nice to drive back to WA.  Would allow me to take a few things from grandparents house and it might be fun to do a tour of things - hubby nor steppie have seen Mt. Rushmore.  (I've been there once)  Corn Palace was fun and of course, Wall Drug :-)  We of, course, want to keep this as inexpensive as possible.  I found some car rental place (Thrify, I think) that offers 1$ a day rentals to basically move their fleet from one place to another - when it's needed.  But they were only reserving until this month and the locations weren't ones we'd go to.

Any body ever heard of, or done themselves, car "moving" for other people?!?  Open to ideas!

Good luck. My experience doing a one-way rental across state lines is that most companies don't allow it. Or if they do, they charge 3 or 4x what they normally would.

They allow it, but the drop fees can be pretty rich.

The youngest two boys poo-poo'd stopping at the Corn Palace, but were happy to roam around there for an hour once we did.

Take a side trip up Beartooth pass (between Yellowstone and Red Lodge, MT)

We've done it before but its quite difficult in the US.

The deal we got was $99 for three days to go from FL to MA.

A few key points:

Most importantly its about timing and direction, ie the car rental companies need to move their fleets north after the spring break/easter season and thats the most popular time for offers on one way deals (thats when we got ours)

Your mileage and time will be limited.  Dont expect to be able to go too far off the direct route between pickup and dropoff, they have pretty steep charges for going over.

Usually just between airport locations - basing this just off my experience in finding locations in FL and MA, the only places we could pick up/drop off were at airports.

Do internet searches for "(insert rental company) one way deal/offer"

However if you happened to live in Australia or New Zealand just go to standbyrelocs.com and get dollar a day rentals year round!
