Subject: Question for US military folk

If my sister is a brand new Ensign in the US Navy, how would I engrave that on a pen that I am making for her?

Thanks.

"Ensign"

or, if you wanted to abbreviate it, "Ens."

Thanks. But to make it look nicer and longer, would it be:

"Ensign XXXXX, United States Navy"?

Or is there some other form?

You could also put her graduation year (assuming Academy) or OCS class number 10-12 or whatever they are up to now. Not sure about NROTC. Congrats to her!

Thanks. She is going to dental school, and then doing her service. So I have no idea what her class number will be.

Since no one seems to have any idea what to do in such a case, it seems that the best idea is:

Ensign XXXXX, United States Navy

Thanks for the suggestion, Maggie. Like I said, no class number yet, so I will go with my original idea.

That is the classiest way to do it. If space is an issue, "Ens XXXXX, USN" would also be acceptable...

I've started to do woodturning, and since I have a smaller lathe, it sorta limits what I can do. Bowls, boxes and pens. Well, also pencils. One buys the parts, and "turns" the blanks to make the body. The blanks can be a hardwood ( many options/colors/patterns), an acrylic, horn, resin, polymer clay and a few exotics. Also

The pens can be anything from a simple slimline to a high end fountain pen.

lol, that made me laugh.  Talk about bringing back memories from my Navy days.

to the OP, it's generally "Ensign First Last" for any type of letter correspondence.  You can also do "Ensign First Last, USN"

Also, depending on how long you want the pen to be utilized you may want to go more generic.  It seems like the Ensigns when I was in only wore their butter bars for a matter of months before getting promoted.  I can't imagine a LTJG or LT using a pen that said Ensign on it.

Either way, I think it's awesome what you're doing.

GO NAVY!

Thanks. As I understand it, she will be an ensign  until she finishes dental school, so for the next 4 years.

And after that, I'll just make her a new one, to reflect her new rank.... Smile
