I need some help to get back on track and start training again. Does anyone have any advice on how to get back on track when you are in a bit of a training rut.

Slowly.  Make a schedule that is not out in left field and try to stick to it for a couple weeks.  AFter that your body will adjust and it will become a normal part of your day.

Hey - sometimes you need a break to recharge the batteries. Don't force it if it isn't there. Take a week where a workout is a brisk walk or lifting a couple of beer bottles from the table to the mouth. Don't sweat it.

Then get back in the saddle. We all get in ruts - it's hard to climb out of them sometimes, but just remember that this is supposed to be fun. Make it fun again.

Any chance you can change the scenery of your training?  I know it sounds counter to drive to go for a run or something like that, but if you can get somewhere with a new view that might help.

Those are some great suggestions! How about setting a goal. Not something far out but something that's near and quickly attainable. Once you reach that, set another and so on. You should be pumped up when reaching your goals which will help you get back into the swing of things.

Today I did not want to bike I did not want to run I wanted it to rain so I would not have to bike so I ran, and for the first time I ran the entire 3.1 miles all the way I remembered the advice of the nice people here on BT JUST KEEP RUNNING and SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP. So I impart the same words of wisdom to you.

Here's what I've done a couple of times when I get into that place: Totally let go of any expectations of performance and just think about what you'd LIKE to do. Do you like roller skating? Ping pong? Chinese checkers?

It turns out that I happen to really like running, and riding my bike probably second, and hey, swimming ain't so bad either, so here I am a triathlete again, but it's not about some kind of arbitrary goal, it's because I actually enjoy doing these sports.

I've been in a MAJOR rut for well over 9 months (xc move, new job, etc) and only this past month have gotten back into working out - not officially training yet. So what I have done is tell myself that i need to work out at least 3x a week - not a lot, just get out there and do a swim/bike/run or hike or weight lifting.

About a month of easing into workouts and not a hardcore training schedule is putting me back in the mood. Now I want to sign up for one or two races.

good luck! you'll find your way back into it. we always do...

I will get flamed for this but.....Get yourself an mp3 player if you don't have one. Fill it with sweet jams and force yourself to go for an easy run. Promise that within 5 minutes you will be having fun again. Then just take it easy so you don't burn out

Stand naked in front of the mirror.

Works for me every time I need motivation.  <shudder>

Right wrong or indifferent, money is a motivator for me.  When I sign up for a race, I've committed financially and it "forces" me to stick to my training.

This might sound dorky, but also I want to "perform" for the people that leave me inspires.  It's like having a TP in the virtual world.

No flames here - I wouldn't have survived winter training without my ipod.  Sometimes getting out with some good tunes for running makes all the difference, and if you're stuck on the trainer, it's a godsend so you don't go nuts.

Getitng out there works for me.  It's like reuniting with an old flame.

Also, make plans to meet someone to swim/bike/run.  That way if you commit you'll be less likely to skip.  And training with other people makes it more fun and social so that it's less of a chore.

I don't know what your training has been like but if you have been hitting pretty hard for a long stretch, you might just need a mental and physical break. I have been training hard since Nov/Dec so after my most recent "A" race, I basically took a week off. I think I swam twice and spun on the trainer for 30 min, that was it. Once I started training again, I felt great and highly motivated.
