I have been following the marine forecast for the Trybee Island Sprint on Sunday. The water temp at 7 am has been a steady 78 degree at 7 a.m., and it expected to be that way on Sunday. Is that still wetsuit legal? The USAT rules confuse me.

I am just asking because I am curious, I am a lousy swimming with or without the wetsuit, so it really doesn't matter to me. I do like it how the wetsuit keeps me warm since I have low iron.

Looking forward to seeing the whole Slayer family out there!

Look forward to seeing you too! At 78, they find a cold spot usually to take temps

The way it was explained to me 78 is wetsuit legal but 78.1 is wetsuit optional.

Wetsuit optional means you can still wear a wetsuit and you can race but your time will not be counted against the podium spots.

For you Jillian since you are going for the podium spot I would not wear one if they say anything above 78.1

Good luck to you guys

Thanks guys!

Edin, I am going for a podium spot so if its optional I will be ditching it. I'll bring the suit just in case it is a wetsuit swim

From the rule book:

4.4 Wetsuits. Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

I'm with phatnot though.  The RD and official will track down a spot below 78 degrees.

I'll be there Sunday morning, this will be my first tri. I found out I'm pretty bad at swimming, so it should be interesting!

Funny you ask, I did use my wetsuit and had my best open water swim ever. I came out of the water behind the fast girls, but in front of the large "pack" of girls in my wave. A first for me, I usually finish behind the pack.

Keep in mind that WTC has lowered their standard for wetsuit legal swim to 76*. It was just over 76 at IMKS70.3 this past weekend and it was not a wetsuit swim. They pulled 100 people out of the rough conditions including one lady before the race started (it was a deep water start)
