...because I completed my first ever sprint distance race this weekend, crossed the finish line and promptly puked!  Embarassing, enlightening, relieving, and humerous!  But, I felt like a million bucks when I was ...empty...even well enough to enjoy a post race brew 15 min later! ha!  I've been in sporting events all my life, completed 2 IM's and many 1/2 IM's and have never done THAT before!

Anyone else have puking stories?  Was it at the middle, end (or beginning) of a race? How did you feel after?  What did you learn from it?

Congrats on puking! That means you finished the sprint right.

Last summer, I finished 2 sprints with puking trying to out run some guy in my AG! one time I caught him and puke right after I cross the finish line the second time I didn't and puke 100m before the finish line! I felt amazing after! Basically what I learned not really sure, maybe what water and Gatorade mix together taste like.

"too legit, too legit to quit..."

There is the old adage, "Puke after the finish line and you've gone out too easy, puke before the finish line and you've gone out too hard, puke ON the finish line and you have paced it perfectly."

Personally, I've got nothing. I try not to vomit at any time. Ever. (Except that one time on an exceptionally bumpy flight when I left the bag nicely folded over in my seat as I deplaned)

I puked up red Gatorade during an important tennis match while in college. Tasted the same coming up as it did going down. Moved to the next vacant court and kept playing. Lost that point, but I won the match. Still can't drink red Gatorade.

You are a human of brilliant mind and body, who really knows how to listen and execute good advice!

Same here, though it was quite a bit after the race (sprint as well, almost a super-sprint). Not only did I redline it, I'd done a marathon the week before and my legs were a wee bit tad HUGELY not ready for that run ... felt really badly after the race and it kept getting worse ...

A few BTers and I went out for lunch after, and I spent so long in the bathroom puking they sent someone after me! He said the sounds from outside were pretty horrible.

Then I came back and just ate the rest of my lunch with great gusto! I mean, I was feeling a lot better at that point. No one else at the table was, though

I've come darn close to puking (last time was doing speedwork in 90-degree heat) but haven't actually done it... yet. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I'm pretty competitive, so the next time I'm already feeling queasy and there's someone in my age group ahead of me, watch out!!!

I have several puking stories, but only one from a "Race"  I say "Race" because it was really just a ride.  I was on mile 97 of a century ride, and there was this long long never ending uphill climb.  I weighed about 275 at the time and was full of Gatorade and Gu.  About halfway up the hill, I just puked on the top tube and all over my feet.  I never did stop pedaling, and finished feeling strong!!

A few times, in high school, I puked in the gutter without breaking stroke in practice and kept going.  Now one of my friends is a high school swim coach and tells them that story when his kids say they aren't feeling well.

I've felt close a few times too, but never have until last weekend.  Now that I know how much better I felt when it was over...maybe I won't try so hard to prevent it in the future!!

I'm never anywhere near puking! I am just not hardcore enough! Cry

Maybe....someday...I will get up the courage to go so hard that my breakfast keeps moving after I've stopped.

Not legit until you collapse at the finish line like people do in 140.6's, but at your local super-sprint.

Sweet.  I'm legit.  (OK, I didn't completely collapse, and it was only gatorade reflux -- apparently, chocolate milk should come after the gatorade, not before it, but ... ) I had some "unpleasantness arise" at my local super sprint (400m/10k/2.5k) last weekend. Laughing

never puked in a race, but thats why I tell my wife that olys and sprints are still no joke(she thinks just because I have done HIM's that they should be easy).  They may not be the distance of a HIM or IM but I have my foot on the gas pedal even harder in those races...I will report back after my first puking sessionSmile

Why did I think that coming into this thread while eating a footlong chicken sandwich would be okay?  Now I want to puke.

I've never puked in a race, but REALLY wanted to several times!!!
Puking is not an easy task for me, and usually when I do, I'm REALLY in trouble :/

I did a marathon relay with some coworkers a few years ago. I was running the second leg and it was in the middle of June in South Texas (probably over 100 degrees F). I finished and as soon as I handed off the baton, I found a tree and promptly puked! I refuse to run that particular event again as it is always held in the middle of the summer and I'm just not interested in running outside when it's that hot outside!

I applaud anyone who can eat so quickly after a race.  It always takes me a good 30 minutes for my stomach to calm down to be able to consume anything solid.

I've puked after my first Oly and after two sprints.  I once ate a turkey sandwich after a short sprint just to see if I could.  Promptly had to puke right in front of everyone.  Did it right behind a tree so no one would see.  For the Oly, puked in the portapotty.  For the other sprint, puked behind a portapotty.

Since have learned to just take in liquids afterwards.  Stinks because some post race foods are really appealing.

Did an seven mile off road cross country race last year. Made it all the way through feeling bad, got all of five feet past the finish line and puked my guts out. Felt great after that!

That's how it is with me! My husband and I both got food poisoning twice this year. Both times, he puked within 3 hours; I resisted, nauseous and miserable, for 12 hours. And both times, I felt instant relief from puking. Maybe I'll eventually learn to puke more readily. Tongue out
