Subject: Sugar & knees ?
Hi there

I am training for my 1st IM in 9 months.
my knees are not responding we'll to all the training - I was hoping they would become stronger As I carried out my training etc

I have improved some aspects of my diet with no improvement ! So what now ? Try giving up sugar would that help , I have read reports giving up sugar greatly improved joint health ?

Well that's my cuppa

Thanks for reading

Try adding omega-3 (fish oil) supplements, make sure you're on top of your anti-oxidants, and consider glucosamine supplements.

"Tried" with these supplements means several months.

Have you done any weight training? Do you have weight to lose? Both of those would probably help, depending on why they're not not "strong" to begin with.

Ive not heard of reducing sugar before for helping joint pain.  I have heard of what briderdt mentioned - fish oil & glucosamine.  Also flaxseed oil.

Consider stacking glucosamine with chrondroitin & MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) for better (anecdotal) results.

Overuse?

My knees were hurting pretty bad during the peak of my IM training.  It hurt to jump or walk up/down stairs.  HOWEVER, it felt fine biking and running - thankfully.  I was starting to think it was overuse or even some arthritis and maybe would have to retire from the long course stuff.  Thankfully, it seems to have gotten MUCH better in the 6-7 months I have cut down the volume.  But, I'm gearing up for another IM, so I hope it doesn't return.

Sorry if I didn't answer your question.  But, I don't think sugar and knee pain are related, but I'm no doctor.

Give up sugar=lose weight=less stress on knees

Makes sense to me!

But, if there's room in your diet, cutting total calories would be more effective than just cutting sugar.
