The storm Friday hit us pretty hard. Lots of big trees fell across US220, a major north/south route through VA and NC. The road was blocked for about 5 hours. We live close enough to the road that we could hear all sorts of activity, chainsaws, heavy equipment back-up beeping, douchebags blasting subwoofers, arguments, and some decidedly unhappy screaming. We found out the next day that a local firefighter had a tree or tree limb fall on him as he was assisting someone who had a tree fall on their car. I found out just now that the fireman has died.
I now know what the screaming was about. That sucks.

We're still without power, and likely will be for some time. A really big tree has fallen and snapped the top out of a power pole just down the road from us, it's a pretty inconvenient spot to do work as the trucks will have to park in the middle of US220 to work. Genny, the teeny tiny generator I bought Saturday will have to keep going, I'll have to keep hauling buckets of water from the Mighty Maggodee Creek to flush, but at least I can shower at work.

I hope you get power back soon. That heat dome left us last week, what a killer. those storms were crazy. The disruptions and damage is bad enough, but power loss and the days required to get it back is really bad. Best thought for you and everyone else.

When I was watching the news about the outages I was wondering how many of my BT peeps would be effected.  I hope the power comes back on soon for you guys.

Little bit of a thread hijack:

I'm a bit of a prepper and sometimes joke with my friends about the end of the world and zombies, but in reality stuff like this does happen and I think its important to "prepare" for it.  Wether its a local weather event shutting down supply routes, prolonged power outages, or some meth head who just escaped prison and needs somebody to rob I think it's very important to have at least a couple weeks of food and water and a way to defend yourself in the event of an emergency.

I'm guessing that mayhem doesn't take EZ-Pass?

FTW!

No, mayhem is strictly a cash-only business.

and this is exactly why we had 1 generator and now have 2. Furnace is hardwired - had electrician come to put in override circuits and he said if our generator was just a bit bigger we could power most of the house - so we upgraded kept the old one for neighbors or parents in case of emergency. Have 3 cases of water in the basement at all times.

Oy vey. And here I was, hoping for a poem ...

Prayers for you ... for your mother (because I often just pray for her anyway) ... and especially for that firefighter's loved ones.

My daughter lost power at her college apartment for 4 days. External generators are not an option for students (or apartment dwellers in general, I would think). She knows to keep her car gassed up. So when she could not find an open hotel with power within 45 minutes drive, she just came home for the weekend.

They got power back this morning. She was tossing everything from her fridge when her roommate asked her to keep her sour cream. Fortunately, my daughter had more sense than to listen. I mean, seriously, who would eat dairy products that sat unrefrigerated for that long in the heat???

Thanks all,

Scored a big generator from Home Depot yesterday. Have fridge and fan going. This unit is big enough (I believe) to run my well pump and the electrical parts of my furnace. Now to get a transfer switch.

Good luck on that - order NOW and pay for super shipping - after the storms in the Northeast last summer/fall it took us 3 months to get ours

You can run it via the dryer plug. SHUT YOUR MAIN BREAKER OFF!!! Then shut off circuits you don't want powered (bedroom lights, range, kitchen hood, etc). Plug the generator into the dryer plug then go outside and start it.

When power is restored, shut the generator down, flip back on those individual circuits, then re-energize the main.

BTW: Hurricane Irene took us out for 5 days last fall, so I feel your pain. It gets quite old after about day 2.

Hey Dave,

We had a miniature version of your troubles in Virginia at our cabin last night.

Power is a fragile, thin line zigzagging over the green tunnel of a county road to the cluster of not-from-around-here lake people.  On an angry night, the link to civilization can be cut off by a old oak tree coming down to its final rest and we become cut off.  In the still and cool after the storm, it is pleasant to sit in the dark on the front porch and wonder when and if the lights will come back on.  We think never but when we decide we should just go to bed swaddled in wet summer air like old times, the lights flicker and come to life, the AC hums and civilization has returned.

It was only a 5 hour outage for us, but it was an opportunity to swim and eat all the ice cream.  I felt very, very lucky.
