It's a bit too much like Fight Club. "The first rule of Crossfit is . . . you do not question the benefits of Crossfit." On the other hand, do whatever it takes to get you motivated.
I think I'm with you! I'm too much of a wimp! When I first glanced at the subject line...I thought it said "Any other BT'ers also "crossDressers"? and I thought "why in the hell does he want to know that? LOL!!! ROTFLMAO !! That is some seriously funny Sh*T !! !! The thought of cross-dressers scares me !! There's an unusual looking she-male at my gym; too much for me. Anyone scared by Crossfit workouts should look at the scaled workouts on www.BrandXMartialarts.com These people post scaled down workouts for mere mortals like me THere was also a good article in Men's Health about 3-6 months ago with 14 day CF routine that was scaled back a bit....it looked a little more tolerable. |

I've been doing weights for a couple of weeks, and I'm thinking of kicking it up a notch... Is this something you guys do instead of straight-up strenght training? How do you incorporate it into your weekly schedule? Currently, I'm holding pretty closely to this schedule:

Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? TO start off, try picking just one day of the week to do a cross fit workout. Read all the intro info on the site, or use one of the alternative sites mentioned above so you don't kill yourself , or get rhabdo, on your first workout! BUt seriously, the workouts "as prescribed" are really stiff and the majority of CFers scale back quite a bit from what is posted in order to do a routine that fits their level of conditioning. Some of the CF workotus are more attractive than others, and everyone has different favorites. THere is a PDF on the front page called "what is fitness". Read it, but like I said before, I don't agree 100% with everythign they say. NEvertheless, there is more fitness information on that site than you'll find collected in one place (except for BT of course!!!) You would substitute CF for your regular strength routines. Some of my frineds do the CF WOD (workout of the day), then add a few exercises that they need more "pracitce" with. THe idea is that the combination of intensity with constantly different stresses & exercises will boost your fitness due to the variety fo the workouts. |

Champion 6285 Beautiful Sonoma County | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? Thanks AB! Crossfit was getting some attention in my other fitness forum and it sounds interesting. After looking at that site, though, I'm a little scared. I'm sure I'd have to scale it WAY down, but that's ok. But I like your idea of incorporating just one workout a week until I get the hang of it. I'll play with the site, as well as the other site recommeneded for "mere mortals" and work up a plan to start next week and see how it goes. |

Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? Here is the men's health article link. http://www.mensjournal.com/healthFitness/0602/workout_20minutes.htm... I like workouts like this one: WORKOUT 2 Do as many rounds as possible in 15 minutes of: 3 pull-ups 6 push-ups 9 squats Because it's already scaled regardless of your BW or fitness. Granted, you may need t odo some verson of assisted pullups, but you are far less likely to hurt yourself with this workout, than with the workouts that assign a suggested weight. Of courseyou can use any weight, but people try to go as heavy as possible, then pay later for it. Edited by AdventureBear 2006-06-15 5:09 PM |

Madkat, Go to the brandx site....they have scaled workouts on several levels that match the Workout of the Day posted on the front page of crossfit.com Go here: http://forum.brandxmartialarts.com/viewforum.php?f=16&sid=74059d7b8... (link is on the right middle of the page at brandxmartialarts.com) They are FUNNY,they post workouts in declining difficulty for: BIG DAWGS Pack Puppies Buttercups I am sure you can find something in there that works for you. I think Crossfit and triathlon training together will make for super-fit people. That's what I am striving for ! |

Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? OK, inspired by this thread, I thought I'd try the workout I posted above...3 pullups, 6 pushups and 9 squats...as many rounds as possible in 15 minutes. I lasted for 2 rounds before I went and got a beer! And they were assisted pullups at that. Maybe we should start a cross fit challenge???? !!! Zev - I know what you mean about the pull ups. I didn't know it was even possible to do so many pull-ups in one workout before CrossFit. That Men's Journal workout is based on the CF WOD "Cindy" - rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups & 15 squats for twenty minutes. The last time I did Cindy in December I got 19 rounds, but it's not uncommon for the CrossFit "fire breathers" to get better than 25 rounds on Cindy, or they do her evil twin "Mary" - rounds of 5 handstand push-ups, 10 1-legged squats and 15 Pull-ups for twenty minutes. |

Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? that picture of me was taken the night before my Escape from Alcatraz...I was trying to psych myself up! I think the hotel lighting has a lot to do with it, cause I don't look that good in regular day light photos! I've been doing handstands everynight...this is soemthing I've been working up to for about 6 monhts, starting witha "frog stand" and in yoga class, forearm stands. As the shouulder stabilizers got stronger, which happens quickly, I experimented with "assisted" handstands in a hotel room one ngiht by putting my feet up on a chair with my back supported on the wall. Now I can kick up against the wall and am getting close to not needing the wall at all! My goal is to be able to do handstand pushups...right now I am just doing tiny little dips once 'm up. |

Elite 2608 Denver, Colorado | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? I suppose my opinion of CrossFit is clouded by the fact that I think "Coach" is a world class a$$hole who has established a cult-like, Kool Aid drinking following where you don't question the benefits of CrossFit (the Fight Club reference was appropriate). Having said that, I've done some workouts, they are indeed tough, and they're good for anaerobic conditioing. Some of the workouts would be difficult to do in a crowded commercial gym because they require that you have access to several pieces of equipment at neraly the same time. I've found that I can get practically the same benefit doing complexes, and all I need is one barbell or set of dumbbells. Even in a crowded gym, you can probably find a free set of dumbbells, find an empty corner of the gym, and go at it. Or do the barbell versions in a squat rack. No one ever uses the squat rack, except to do curls. This is my favorite complex that I used a lot during the summer: Bent over row Power clean Front squat immediately into a press Back squat Good morning. Use the same weight for all exercises (hence, you only need one barbell), do 5-8 reps per exercise, and take no rest between exercises. When you complete the circuit, rest 90 seconds, then do it 2-3 more times. |

Expert 935 South eastern Ohio | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? I have just started....like as in last week. So far I love the Challenge of it. I used to lift more before I got into Tri's but wanted to get into it again in the off season. I have done 3 days on and one off and modify some of the workouts. Heck, the basic warmup after not lifting for a while is a challenge for me. I don't know too much about their goals (the site that is) and I don't have a gym with it around here close. A few of our local trainers are doing it and I have asked them ?? when I can't find out what I want to know. As with everything else it is just what are your goals and all. But I do like the diffrence in the workouts. Hate being bored. Chris |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? well remember its all based on your goals. if you want to have more muscle, look better and not win a tri then it could really help you with those goals. It might not make you the fastest one out there but it may help you get faster and look better. I start doing more weight lifting myself in order to work out any muscle imbalances I might have and to help drop the weight. I do not have the muscles I need to really lose weight. speed work might help with building muscle but I think lifting will be less liking to cause injury. |

Extreme Veteran 468 | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? I have been doing CF since February and can definitely tell the difference. My biking mileage is down from last year but I am stronger on the climbs than I have been in a long time. I started out modifying the workouts, but after a few months I started doing them as prescribed and loved it. They were a nice compliment to my regular training. |

Regular 107 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? I'm a certified crossfit trainer. I'm not a punch drinker however and see flaws in the thinking of the "crossfit punch drinkers". With that being said, there are quite a few misconceptions about crossfit, and crossfit in relation to triathlon training. I'll tri to answer some of them... Chirunner...your post about looking better, being more muscled and not winning triathlons is way off base. There are several dedicated crossfitters who are extremely successful triathletes. MiketheBear, "Coach" can be an @$$hole , but my personal experiences with him have been that he is very encouraging of questioning the crossfit methodology. Crossfit came about from questioning the standards, and will continue to evolve as long as it is always questioned and never taken as a golden rule. The punch drinkers who think that it's the only way to workout are very irritating. I agree with you on that. That Men's journal article only offered a sample workout. It misses the point though. Crossfit is based on the idea of constantly varied, functional movements. As soon as you take away the random nature out of the workouts and try to program it, crossfit loses its benefits. By continually keeping the program random, the body is constantly forced to adapt and these adaptations happen more quickly because of the varied exercises. People shouldn't be intimidated by crossfit. I've worked out at several different crossfit gyms and have always found it to be a welcoming, encouraging environment. Much the same as triathlon. The forums on the crossfit site are great sources of information on how to get started and scale the workouts, as well as get information from other crossfitters/triathletes on how to incorporate crossfit into triathlon training. Crossfit would be incorporated into a triathlon program in place of other strength training. The great thing about CF is that it will balance out a lot of the muscle groups that are neglected or underused by tri training and these will improve triathlon fitness as a whole. I'd be happy to help anyone who is interested in working crossfit into their schedule. Especially with the offseason being here for most people, it's a great time to try something new! Champion 6627 Rochester Hills, Michigan | Subject: RE: Any other BT'ers also "Crossfitters" ? I don't do the workouts as prescribed. But I do value them for the agility, core strength, and flexibility. They tend to develop a lot of strength-in-motion, which supports all three sports. I pick and choose the exercises from crossfit. But some of 'em have worked their way into my standard strength workout. |

There is an abundance of information about the program. If you go to the forums and do a search for "crossfit triathlon" and "Eugene Allen triathlon" you'll find a number of threads talking about creating an integrated triathlon training program with Crossfit methodologies. bts |
