I find it VERY suspect.  I can remember the time of my very first 10k over 15 years ago within a minute and this is a MARATHON.

I can't tell you the time of my 2 miles, 5k's, 10k's, 13.1 or my super sprints or my only 70.3 triathlon.  I guess that makes me a liar also.  I can tell you that I was never DFL, but darn close, but I beat people a lot younger and probably a lot healthier at the time that were DNF.

I am not saying that he doesn't know or didn't know, but there are some of us that don't care that our time was x hours, xx minutes and xx seconds for a certain event.

Honest question - if someone asked your times would you say "I don't remember, it was a long time ago" or would you make up something that sounded really good and then reply with "I was pretty fast, yeah"  If the former, you would not be lying.  If the latter, well, yeah, you'd be lying.

I would make something up but instead have to say "I was pretty slow, yeah"

Seriously if someone asked what my first run race time was (a 2-mile run, I can't even remember that finish time) - I'd say "Around 20 minutes" but it could have been 15 or 25 minutes. First half marathon? "Around 2.5 hours" - could have been 2:15, could have been 2:45. I have no idea. Same story with HIMs, IMs and marathons. I still have to look up my first marathon and IM times, but I do know within ~15 minutes what it was.

Am I a liar?

I'm curious as to the political affiliations on those who thing it's a d-bag move vs. those who think it was a mistake/who cares?

Captain Obvious has a hunch, but could be wrong.

I vote based on how the candidates stand/ vote on the following topics; abortion, equal rights, environment, health care, education, and the economy. Which based on my beliefs generally means left nationally... BUT locally my vote can go (and has) in any direction. I always vote for who I think will do the better job.

It is his personality that realllllly annoys me and his statement just personified what I have always disliked about some runners - "I don't care about my time so long as I am better than you." [yea right even tho you cut 25% off your time]

As my coach use to say "It doesn't matter how far out in front of everyone you are in the race... you are still racing the clock." You have PR's, track records, meet records, National Records, Olympic Records, and World Records. Running is a personal experience based on what you put in is what you get out.

To me it's a d-bag move to try to make yourself out to be something you are not [or better than you actually were]. I will call anyone out for this type of move.

oooh and for super fun... The Paul Ryan Time Calculator.

http://www.paulryantimecalculator.com/?submitted=yes&time=4%3A48%3A53&distance=marathon&gender=m

My PR of 1:52.2 in the 800m gets adjusted to 1:21.35 PRPR smashing the world record by nearly 20 seconds.

Am I a liar?

I could probably tell you within 10% what my first 5k time was, because I can multiply easily by 3. And with a minute or two to do the math, I could tell you what my first 10k probably was, because I maintained the same pace more or less as I did for a 5k and in my training runs. But I could not tell you my first half mary times because (a)my math skills in my head are not going to be that quick and (b) I have no recollection of what kind of times I was running on a per-mile speed.

Maybe the reason his numbers are so off is that he was simply taking his current mile time and multiplying by 26? If he runs a sub-7 minute mile (which would be blazing fast for me, but certainly not an unreasonable time for better runners), he may well have calculated a sub-3 hour marathon.

OMG, I can't BELIEVE you didn't see the sarcasm in my post.  Do I REALLY need the font?  Seriously?

I do remember my first time, cuz it was my first.  And a rough idea of my IM times...  But the hundred in between?  No clue.

This is such a non issue to me, that I made the joke of being SO offended/outraged.

It reminds me a bit of the big fish stories- you know, the fish gets bigger each time it's told?  He's clearly got an ego (don't most politicians?), and I'm guessing the time just got faster in his mind the farther away he got.  I don't think it reaches DB territory, but maybe "tool".  I doubt it will change many votes (actually there's been some interesting analysis about this- apparently only about 5% of the electorate is truly up for grabs in the presidential election).

And yes it's a pretty pointless piece of minutiae in this campaign, but isn't that what COJ is for?

Oh, and I'm unaffiliated and moderate.

Yep, I missed it and so did others obviously.  Sorry about that as I read it as someone that really knows their times of their events.
