Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 112/173
Age Group = 65 - 69
Age Group Rank = 2/3
Pre-race routine:

Arrived nice and early due to not sleeping well. Ate a cliff bar but had a queasy stomach so I skipped the Gu. Had a good spot in transition so I set up, talked to a few people and walked out to the beach. Walked South so that we could swim back North.
Event warmup:

Just stretched out as I had a calf cramp last night.
Swim
  • 18m 21s
  • 700 yards
  • 02m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first ocean swim so I didn't know what to expect. It was difficult getting beyond the break as there were a few big waves that pushed everyone back. Got stung by a jellyfish about mid swim just like many others. Mine was minimal, some people had to abandon the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I swam too much with my arms, I need to be sure to engage my back and core more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Bike
  • 44m 30s
  • 13 miles
  • 17.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Started with the wind and probably went out too hard. Did a good job of avoiding bad spots in the road. I learned that the white paint on the side of the road was smoother than the road. Tough coming back into the wind. Eased up near the end to have something left for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I should have ridden the course before the race. I did OK but I expected to be faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

There were many people standing around in transition. I know some were relay teams but I don't know what the others were doing there. Made it difficult to get around them.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 35m 32s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Heart rate was too high starting out and it took too long to get it under control. Only one water station at the mid-point. Got very hot for the last mile. Jogged alongside of a guy who was power walking as he was recovering from a hip operation. I left him and tried to finish hard but the heat got to me.
What would you do differently?:

I expected to have a better run. I think the fact that I didn't drink enough on the bike segment carried over to the run. Live and learn.
Post race
Warm down:

Felt very weak so I grabbed a Coke and sat down in the shade. Had some water too but didn't like the snacks they had. Wanted a banana but couldn't find any. Walked back the two blocks to transition, collected my stuff and headed home after the awards were handed out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Don't know, I expected to do better. I think it was the heat and humidity.

Event comments:

Overall I had a good time. People were friendly, the weather was hot and humid but no rain and I finished second in my age group (Out of three). Parking was good, the transition area was nice and the approximately 200 people is a nice size for a race. One of the swim waves had too many people, but mine was good. As usual the bike was my best event and the run was my worst.

Course: The course is very flat but has stretches of very rough road. Volunteers at every intersection and there were many. Also great police presence with some roads closed off for us.
