If you have done a 6 person.

What did you think of it?

How were the logoistics?

Ranger say 12 person or 6 person over the 200 mile races if you did 5 you are awesome.

What did you think of the race and logoistics?

I have friends who have done a 6 person Ragnar. The logistics are a little different. They still had 2 vans with 3 people. The harder part is that each person runs consectutive legs instead of alternating legs. For example the 3 people in the first van run legs 1-6. They assumed that the first person would run legs 1 & 4, second person legs 2 & 5 and the third runner legs 3 & 6. Instead the rules say that runner one runs legs 1 & 2, runner two legs 3 & 4 and runner three legs 5 & 6. They did fine but weren't prepared to run back to back legs.

The other issue is having someone drive. If you have 6 people in a van it's easier to share the driving. With three people, when you're running there's one person on the course, one person sleeping and another driving. The person sleeping has to wake up and drive right away while the runner just finishing goes to sleep. In the middle of the night they thought the driving got a little hairy with the driver being very tired. It would be good if you had a volunteer driver who wasn't running.

I've done a 12 man Ragnar and had a blast. Probably the most fun I've had doing a race.

Me too - best fun ever. Got another one coming up next weekend. Never tried a 6-person Ragnar myself.

Doing a 6-person Ragnar would count as quite hard-core. I was initially surprised to read that runners do consecutive legs. That would be harder running-wise, but the pay-off would be that it would at least make it easier to try to get some sleep on the in-between bits. Which in turn would make the driving more feasible. The other logistical aspect that would become more feasible in a 6-person team with consecutive legs would be the constant rush to get from one exchange to the next. A lot of time in a 12-person team is spent getting the last runner ready to get back into the van, and then getting the next runner to the next exchange with a few minutes to spare for warm-up and calls-of-nature. With double-length legs that would take the time pressure off a bunch.

The 6-person teams are generally also among the fastest teams in the race.

I've done the 6 person Ragnar (you're basically an "ultra" team because your individual mileage will most likely account for over 26.2 miles...). We did the Woodstock race, it was such a blast.

We only had one van and we simply leap frogged our way through the race. Worked fine, and this included having to pick up one of our team members at a train station because he had booked a commercial that morning.

Each person did two legs before a handoff, which usually was around 6-13 miles. Highly recommend the 6 person team, it was such a blast and I liked that it was just the 6 of us (getting 12 people together to do this seems like a nightmare...). Seemed less annoying than coordinating with two vans. Also, it's really not that tough to do the miles, because you're still taking a couple hours between each leg to rest.

Also, this, if you can see it: tips for a successful Ragnar Relay:

Ragnar or Ragnar-Like race(s) are definietly on my bucket list.  A couple frineds of mine are working to put together a 6 person team for the Madison-Chicago ragnar.  Another cool race sounds like the Bourbon Chase in Kentucky.

Different but also very cool sounding is the Trans-Rockies 6 day race.  You and partner race approx 20 miles / day over the rockies for 6 consecutive days.  Fully supported race.  you and your partner have to start and finish together each day.

Last weekend I did Ragnar - Colorado as part of the 12 person team, I did it the previous two years when it was the Colorado Relay with 10 runners.  I am considering doing it as part of a 6 man ultra team next year.  The total was 190 miles so it would only be 31.7 miles per runner.

I did Ragnar key west as part of an Ultra team. I was one of the team captains, so lots of logistics.

WE did it in 2 vans and had 1 support driver help.

I have also done 100 mile relays with 5 runners in one car, and that worked well.

Ragnar Ultra is a blast, and we were NOT one of the fastest teams.

In fact, here is my race report-

My brother did one in FLA to the Keys. Sounded like a lot of effort and trouble, but his team had a blast. Big fun.

I did Ragnar Del Sol in Arizona as part of a 6 person Ultra team.  I have done 7 Ragnars, six in 12 person teams and one in a 6 person team.  The Ultra route is absolutely the way to go.  You run more but you sit around less and you don't have to wait around for hours for the other van to be done.  Definitely only do it in one van.  No need for two vans.  The whole point is not to have to mess with the logistics of two vans.  The best Ragnar vehicle is a Suburban.  Big but not an RV.  The 12 person teams are fun runs.  The 6 person team is a real challenge.
