Santa Rosa Island Triathlon
78F / 26C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 07m 31s
Overall Rank = 15/848
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/50
Pre-race routine:

Left the house at 4:35am arriving at race site at 5:40am. Ensure, Pop Tarts and a couple of crackers. Sipped on Accelerade on way over.
Event warmup:

Ran a short warm up. Did some strides. Swam about 200 yards before swim start
Swim
  • 11m 56s
  • 586 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was wetsuit legal but given warm air temperature and short swim I went with swimskin. Struggled to get in a rhythm for the first 100 or so yards then fairly solid swim. Got congested when caught up with earlier wave. Time includes long run up the beach to timing mat. Sighting was better this race.
What would you do differently?:

I'm sure wetsuit would have helped time but timing chip was large and probably would have lost time getting the suit off.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Helmet had been knocked off the bike so lost a few seconds there. Long run to bike exit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really...not great/not bad
Bike
  • 32m 15s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 23.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Never felt great on the bike. Very foggy and could not see through visor on aero helmet so had to raise up and look under the visor. Speed should be higher given watts AP245/NP249. Might have been the crosswinds that caused slower speed. Everyone I talked to was disappointed in bike split so who knows. Really hoping to be around 30 minutes for the bike based on other recent bike splits.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push harder. Really did not get in a comfortable rhythm until half way point.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Pretty good. We had to slow way down for the last 200-300 yards before hitting dismount line. Long run to run exit.
Run
  • 20m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Wanted to start out with 6:45 pace and try to build into faster pace. Struggled to maintain that pace for the first mile but pushed harder over the last mile. My best 5k run split in a triathlon. Maybe next year I can break 20 min in trithlon 5k
What would you do differently?:

Looking back you always wish you would have pushed harder but just did not feel that I could do anymore when I was racing. Solid run overall.
Post race
Warm down:

Did a short cool down run. Visited with friends and teammates. Great post race food from Carrabas Italian Grill. Hung around for awards and got a cool 2 foot high hand carved "Tiki" for 1st place Grandmasters.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Felt flat on the bike. I should have been stronger mentally and pushed harder through that leg.

Event comments:

Very well done. Fortunately I was in an early swim wave so bike course was not crowded. Shortened bike course became quite crowded later given the number of races. Best race food EVER! Great venue, activities and awards presentation.
