Elite 3140 | Subject: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon Dont Believe this has made the internet yet, but I live in the NYC area and Mike Franscesa a local Sports radio guy just read a report that the mayors office is getting heat from congressmen/senators etc about running the marathon. One issue is the thousands of cops that are needed to run it and some of those cops have been working double and triple shifts and their own families are without power or their homes are destroyed So I am posting this for those racing to continue to follow this story closely.....My gut says it will go on since Bloomberg is pretty stubborn but if the unions or the commisioner get on him he could fold if I see the actual report in print I will link it |

Wichita | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon Thanks for the post. I am fine if they cancel it. If they do we will probably volunteer while we are they to help clean up or something. From pictures I have seen of lines for express buses I can't see how people are going to get around. |

Regular 549 | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon I live in New Jersey and after watching the coverage on TV, I dont know how they can execute this. But Bloomberg is stubborn (as an earlier poster said) and usually gets his way. To ask the police, fire, etc to work extra hours for this does not make sense. |

Master 2500 Crab Cake City | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon They were talking about it this morning on my local radio station down here in Baltimore. I am a cop and we have been working mandatory 12hr shifts since sunday because of the storm. I just went back to a normal 8 hours today. We did not get hit as hard as NY/NJ but still bad. I can see both sides of the argument in reference to the race. My gut tells me that they will have the race, I mean this is NYC my friends, when was the last time something shut that city down? I believe the issue could also be related to how much water/damage there is along the route, electricity to residents and access to services for residents who live along the route. My girlfriends mom is supposed to race this weekend so it will be interested to see what happens. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon It doesn't seem right to be diverting resources for the marathon that can be used elsewhere for the restoration and relief effort. I am scheduled to run it this weekend and I am on the fence right now as to whether to do it or not. I really think they should postpone it a week or two and focus on helping people and getting the city back up and running. |

Talk about a logistic nightmare that would be. It will go forward and half the people registered will actually show up. Every person I know from out this way that was scheduled to go has bailed. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon I'm kind of amazed it is still going to happen (as of now) given the situation and lots of people still not having power. I think runners would understand if it was canceled. |

Expert 1544 Alexandria, MN | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon I would hate to give "runners" a black eye in the public image as being selfish about having their race when all this hurricane stuff is going on. I understand the whole idea of "getting back to normal", but I would think the race will be less of an experience as other years and just too taxing on the system right now. My $0.02. |

134 | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon I think it's a VERY poor decision to run the race right now. With all the people needing assistance right now, I think it's irresponsible to pull police/EMS resources for this. I understand the importance of the race on many levels, but this is NOT the time. |

Conversely, that is a whole lot of dollars coming into the city for that race. Hotels, restaurants, etc... Perhaps that isn't as big of a deal for a place like NYC, but I'd think that every bit helps. If nothing else, it will help offset all of the overtime that is getting paid out right now. |

Member 38 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon Here's a quote from an article on Gawker that stuck out to me..... And Councilman James Oddo said, “To begin this one mile away from where we are still looking for bodies is sinful.” |

Extreme Veteran 534 Herriman, Utah | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon Absolutely opposed to them continuing the race. At least they should postpone the race. 1) It will take too many resources (cops, volunteers) that could be used to assists in clean up and other safety. 2) Roads are already congested since several key subways are down. 3) Possible backlash from residents during the run. |

Probably not high on the list of concerns if you are looking for loved ones or what's left of your home. The media is playing down the real severity of the situation, and to go forward with the race is just absurd. |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: NYC congressman/Senators pressing Mayors office to cancel NYC Marathon Anyone who had done this race knows it's a logistical nightmare in the best of circumstances. I think it's really a bad idea to race when so many residents still don't have the basics. Imagine the finish line - runners being handed warming blankets, water, food -- while many locals, who have lost everything, aren't even getting those basics! I really worry about riots. They're showing 3 major generators (enough to power 400 homes each) just to power the media tent/pre-race pasta dinner tent. I think the argument for the revenue the marathon brings is irrelevant this year- I doubt they'll raise 1/2 of what they usually get-locals (NJ/CT/NY - who are the ones who spend a good portion of the revenue at restaurants and bars along the course) will not be showing up this year. I did read that a couple hotels on Staten Island are turing runners away, because they will not honor their reservation if it means turning out families that have no home, power, etc... |

As they should. Want to cement an image of runners being self absorbed and elitist, get one on TV throwing a fit because of all the time and money they've lost by cancelling a race. |
