This spring Ill be looking for a new set of wheels. I'd like a set of 60mm but they need to be do everything wheels with the intention of using a wheelbuilder cover for races. I am also on a tight budget and am eyeing up the Flo wheels, but the Planet X are a few hundred cheaper and are actually on special now for $499.

Are the Flo wheels a few hundred dollars better than the planet X?  I've heard some great things, while i on a budget I'd rather get a better wheel if they are significantly better.

Opinions??

I would say yes... Flo is that much better. First of all, with Flo, you will have aluminum brake track, which means that you don't need to switch brake pads when you switch wheels (you can't use the same pads for an aluminum brake track training wheelset and a racing carbon track wheelset..). Second, the aluminum box rim with carbon fairing, makes the wheel surprisingly comfortable (they soak up vibrations quite well). From an aerodynamic point of view, Flo is clearly superior compared to the narrow rim, v-profile of the Planet X.

Planet X 60's have aluminum sidewall as well

From the site:

At last! The result of extensive testing by Planet X's resident cycling legend Mark Lovatt, these 60mm carbon clincher wheels are fast, light and tough - an an absolute bargain at just $599.99 per pair.

With 60mm rims, these wheels weigh just 1810g per pair, for quick acceleration and nimble handling compared to similar wheels. Because they have CNC-machined aluminium sidewalls, your brakes will still work properly in all conditions and with a polished 3k weave they look great too.

Still (wasn't aware that PX now has introduced wheels that are more suitable for the average rider...)... Flo has invested heavily in aerodynamics... that would still be my choice.

Agreed; I don't really see the benefit in building a carbon clincher and then adding an alu brake track. If you are going to go with an alu brake track, then just make that integral to the rim.

If you are going to pop on a wheel cover does it matter (at least for the rear?). Wouldn't you rather buy the less expensive wheel and pop the cover on?

Are the presumed benefits of Flo on aerodynamics worth the money over Planet X? I haven't seen any data on how much faster they might be (although everyone assumes they are), but is 1s/40km worth $300 (or whatever) to the OP?

An equally intriguing question (for me):

Been thinking of getting FLO 60/90 or 90/90 for roughly $1100, but just checking Planet-X, I can get their tubular 82/101's for $499.

The FLO's may have better aerodynamics in certain wind conditions, but tubulars roll better.... are the two factors minimal enough that they cancel each other out?  Is the difference significant enough to warrant $600?

Are the Planet-X wheels good for Clydes?

How much of a difference do FLO's ceramic bearings make?

Man - I seriously hate these kinds of decisions.  I want race wheels, but not being able to make good, clean sense of all the factors involved is paralyzing.

I have those planet X wheels and really like them. Can't say whether they are better, worse or the same but for $600 (when I got them) they cost fractionally more than new stock wheels so it seemed like a reasonable bet. Everyone has different set-points on what they think is worth it but that was worth it to me. I weigh about 175 lbs so can't comment on the clyde bit but I doubt you are going to find one carbon wheel that is better for clydes than others (I could be wrong).

I think PX wheels are rated to 215ish. I contacted them earlier and that's why I don't have a set. I agree with the statement that what it's worth to gain 1s/40km. I'm naive, but how much better can one be than another when you're talking about spending 2-3x's the $$$. In my mind it should be 2-3x's faster which none are.

That being said I'll be picking up a set of FLO's because they're rated to 242lbs and affordable. That or H3's if I can find a deal.

So the more searching around i've done, I came up with the Flos are a better wheel. They use a wider rim which rides much better.  They are more aero, but I'm not sure that is going to be a huge difference for me since i'm no rocket. The hubs and spokes are better quality as well. So, you do get a better wheel for your money.  the question you have to answer is, if the upgrades are worth the cash to YOU.   I am leaning towards a set of flo 60's. Hopefully in the early spring.
