Pre-race routine:

I got to the race about an hour early and it made a huge difference... no traffic problems and the port-a-johns were clean and stocked with TP. I met up with David and we caught up until about 15 min before the race. Perfect weather!
Event warmup:

I downed a caffeine gu about 15 min before the race. Yay for performance enhancing drugs!

Comments:

I've ran this race every year but one (2005) since 2003. My personal best was 44:53 in 2008 (after I did a marathon in Sept) and I just missed that in 2010 when i went 44:54 (after I did an IM in Sept). As I had done a marathon this Sept I decided it wasn't outside the realm of possibility to PR.

Two things working against me: 1.)My 2nd child was born 1 1/2 weeks ago and I've only been able to squeeze 1 run in since. (Now I didn't abandon my wife to the mercies of our children... my sister came up to help out while I was racing) and 2.)I had started to feel the onset of a cold.

But whatever right? You have to go for the PR when you have the training banked to do it. As I've ran this race so many times I decided to go with my typical strategy: start up ahead of the 7 min pace sign to get out in front of all the slower people, go with the flow for mile 1, crush mile 2 (pretty much all downhill), take it easy on the bridges, hang on through mile 5 and 6, and then sprint that last .2.

All pretty much went according to plan. I banked a bunch of time at Mile 2 (6:41) and felt good. I did walk for a few seconds at the water stop because I was thirsty and wanted to make sure I got some water in. I honestly thought I was gonna get a PR by 30 seconds when I hit 5 1/2, but when I hit mile marker 6 and my Garmin said 6.1 I knew it was gonna be close. I just turned that final corner and went for it. I'm sure that the pictures will show me in complete agony as I hit the finish line. I looked down at my Garmin after I crossed and knew it would be close. I waited about 15 minutes for my buddy to finish and with the help of his smart phone discovered I had PR'ed by 1 second (44:52). So that's a 44:52, a 44:53, and a 44:54. Yay consistency! I'm 4 years older, have two more kids, and weigh 10 more pounds than 2008 dtjunkie and I still beat that guy by 1 second!

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Much better than I expected considering the lack of training this month.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed two water bottle, two packets of apples, and a bag of peanuts and was well on my way to gorging myself the rest of the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. Maybe I should have ran the tangents better. Garmin said 6.33.
