At the beginning of each lap and at the turn, I say the name of the Yankee player whose retired (or soon-to-be retired) uniform number corresponds to the lap number.
1-Martin
2-Jeter
3-Ruth
4-Gehrig
5-DiMaggio
6-Torre
7-Mantle
8-Berra
9-Maris
10-Rizzuto
I’m not even a Yankee fan. I just learned the numbers by osmosis from living here. I suppose you could use any names that were associates with specific numbers between 1 and 10.

I use pennies.  Similar to your marble idea.  I use them when I am doing longer sets, moving one over every 100 yards or so.  Count out how many you will need beforehand, so you can just go by how many are left.  When you move the last penny, you are done.

Next lap:
Two.  Two.  Two.  Two.....

I have a $5 watch that I use.  I put it into the mode as if I were going to set the time on it, and each time I hit the wall, I press the button.  I'll start it at midnight or 12:00, and then it just adds a minute for each lap.  I don't believe in flip turns for tri training so it works out well for me.

this is what I do.

When I try to do this it goes:

One one one one

two two two two

three three ok.. the next ones gonna be 4

four.. wait.. I already said 4... 5 5 5

5. did I already say 5? no... 5 5

5. did I already say 5? maybe... lets just play it safe. 5 5

6 6 6 6

continue distinct lack of progression

Does it really matter? not really, but its nice to know how long it actually took.

Learn to use your watch or pool clock.  I know how fast I generally swim so just glancing at the time, I know how far I have gone.  I might be 50 yards off if I lost track after a couple thousand, but by then, does 50 yards really matter?

In general, I use 2min/100 as a time.  Granted I'm faster than that and can typically get 300 yards done in 5 min, but with rest brakes between sets and such, it's 2min/100.  If it's a long continuous swim, I will note if I'm a minute, or two minutes, or three (and so on) ahead of my pace.

I did the penny thing initially when I was starting out. Now I go into each swim already knowing what my swim will be.

I always start with the same 800 yd warmup, so that's always easy to remember. I usually do 200-400 yards of drill and pull, then do a ~1500 yard main set (100's or 200's on a certain send off time). With a cool down, I get in around 3000 yards, and it goes pretty quick and I never really have to think about lap counts.

I also know what my paces should be, and use the pace clock for send off times for intervals.
