Subject: How Does Cold Weather Affect Your Race Pace?

I ran the Christmas Day Joyful 5K this morning in Minnesota in about 21:45, which is over a minute slower than my average, recent 5K times.  The temp at start time was 1 degree (Fahrenheit) with a little wind.  I am curious to know if weather may have played a part in this slowdown.  If not, it may have been the five layers of clothing or the five thousand Christmas cookies I had for my pre-race dinner.  At any rate, it was a painful, miserable experience and my husband said the same thing.  We both had issues breathing, and judging from the respiratory noises the runners around me were making, we weren't the only ones.  Still glad I did the race- what a neat thing to do on a Christmas morning!

I know there's a math formula for expected slowdown in hot weather.  Can't remember exactly but it's so many seconds/ mile for every five degrees above 60.  I was just curious to see if it worked both ways (cold and hot).  Looks like no one is sure anyway!

Did you warm up enough prior to the race? Also the extra clothing is certain to slow you down, at least a little

I hate running in the cold, so I usually go faster. "The faster I run, the faster I'm done."

I'm from MN and I know I run at a slower pace in the winter.  Main reason for me is footing.  There is usually some snow/ice on the trail at least in spots which causes a slower pace for safety.  I also agree the extra clothing must be a slight factor.  Another factor is I'm never at the same run fitness level in the winter as I am in the summer/fall.  All are valid reasons to see a decrease in pace and they do add up.  Congrats on racing on Christmas Day!

Running in 40, i ran the fastest 5k in my life during a triathlon at 19:37 (measured it and its really close, within 100m) and half was XC. Never ran in anything colder, but I can see where breathing would be a problem.

I'm from southern Texas and am not used to anything colder than 55, usually.

When it gets close to or below 30 degrees, I feel like my muscles are just stiffer on outdoor runs.  Even if my body temp feels comfortable, I still feel stiffer and thereby just a bit slower.

The cold weather has actually helped my pace. I struggled all summer long and didn't feel like I was making any progress this year with my running pace, but as soon as the weather started cooling down i have seen a big difference. I actually had a new 5K PR a couple of weeks ago. It was a night run and temp was in the 30's.

However, I haven't ran in temps as low as that, so I can't say how I would do if it was 1 degree outside. Coldest I have ran in is 20's. This year i have enjoyed running in the cold weather because I feel like I can push myself really hard without overheating and my heart rate stays lower.

I know that I can estimate a pace 15 seconds slower when I wear tights and cold weather gear.  Another 15 second slower pace when I bring my fuel belt with water.

All that clothing certainly can slow you down. I'm always a bit slower once I need pants instead of shorts. Various thermal layers can slow down too. I love cookies as well, but eating a ton of them can affect me some. And anything that causes breathing issues will slow you down. The muscles might need some more warming up, but should be fine once they get it. The three things highlighted are where to look, so if you can address those then you should do better.

The effects of temperature on running that I have seen put the optimal about 55 degrees with an 8-12 second negative effect on a 5k for every 5 degree rise with that amount increasing as it gets hotter.  Not sure how the scale would go as it gets colder but I would think that it would be slightly less of an impact.

For me, when it gets colder I wear more gear that restricts my movement slightly and the extra weight can be significant, especially as those layers get wet from sweat or the elements.  I have been amazed at how heavy my stuff has gotten after a run.

My experience is the longer the race, the less it affects your time. It was bitterly cold and a very slow start at Marine Corps in 2011, but after around 5 miles I was warmed up and fine. Also did a cold and rainy duathlon and just never got warm, and running off the bike was horrible. Ideal for me is 45-50 for marathon, 60+ for short distances.

My lungs would not handle 1 degree. That's dreadmill weather.

I run faster in the cold, both during, and during races.  In a perfect world no running race I entered would get above 40 degrees.  I half marathon PR'd earlier this year, race start was below 40, stayed fairly cool for the entire race, if it had gotten much warmer, I would have really suffered as I heat up a lot!

I always run faster in the cold, I love winter running, I can boost my pace by almost 30 seconds /mile over summertime averages without any problems, I live for below 40 degree temps, the colder the better in my book.

I do a lot better than running in the heat....I would rather run in sub 30 degrees than 80+ anytime

This is totally me. 30 degrees and I'm in a thin long-sleeved shirt that is removed if I'm doing speedwork and get really warm.

That being said, 1 degree is SO extreme that it would definitely affect my pace, especially as I have exercise-induced asthma which is really set off by hard runs in cold temperatures. Coldest I have ever raced in was 10 degrees. 1 degree, I wouldn't do it. Treadmill weather.

for me from 65 down to 30f i will run  faster, anything below or higher will start to slow me down. i can run faster in shorts and jacket then tights and jacket. tights can easily add 30sec a mile to me which is a lot if you think about it.

My experience has been that mid 50s is optimal for running and when you go up or down, you lose something. You lose much more headed up, but the colder it gets, I seem to slow down a bit.  As said earlier, longer races probably see less slow down because you have time to warm up. I doubt you'd even warm up in a 5K at 1 degree unless you spent the prior 30 mins consistently warming up for the race.
