Maybe you should consider obtaining a heart rate monitor as a means to provide feedback on your efforts. These items are often the price of a running shoes.

I'm 53, started training at 49, but I think I'm still a kid at heart. I find that learning to use electronics, even in their basic mode, is very helpful to not overdoing it, monitoring and inspiring progress. I started with a simple heart rate monitor, but something that provides pace info too really helps to identify when you're overdoing it. Learning the difference between temp runs, hill workouts, track workouts, and long slow runs at first seemed over the top to me, but it has really helped me.
