If I were to Volunteer for IM Lake Placid, would that guarantee me entry for the following year?  Not sure how this works but would love to volunteer and would love to give it a try the following year...thanks

Yep volenteering would get you a guaranteed entry into next year. L. P. is not an instant sell out like in years past. It will be open online for a few hours.

Yeah, I signed up online this year, so volunteering should guarantee you a spot.

The volunteer slots have to be 4 hrs. long for a shot a wristband for IMLP '14.  Wetsuit strippers do not qualify for sign ups - as an example.  On the volunteer page, click on the volunteer position you want and a small window will pop up with a short description of the position and if it does not qualify you for a wristband, it will say it there also.  I will be handling bikes

I volunteered for bike setup the day before at Panama City Beach.  I was there for 8 hours but really enjoyed chatting with a few of the pros and seeing their bike setups.  That guaranteed a spot for the following year.

Yep, learned this the hard way in 2011 with signup for 2012. I volunteer every year anyway (I'm a local), but really wish I had known that I could have slept in and registered online instead of getting up at 5 (after being up until 1 to see all the finishers come though) and waiting in line. Sigh.

Thank you for those that are volunteering! Couldn't do the race without you.

Yup, volunteered last year and it was a great experience. Try and get a couple days before the race to swim and bike the course. Everyone waiting in line on Monday got registered.

I volunteered last year as well (turns out it was same aid station on the run as Brian (above). I am volunteering again this year, but doing transition tent in the middle of the day. My plan is to sign up for '14, so this will make sure that happens.

Speaking of, I got an email from the team leader today and they are really having a hard time filling up the volunteer spots for the men's tent, second shift. So if anyone is interested...

To be technical, there is no guarantee that you'll be able to register. Qualified volunteers get first dibs to the onsite registration slots on Monday morning after the race. Those are the slots that are left over after race participants get the option of registering for the following year prior to that year's race. There will be two lines on Monday; one for volunteers, one for non-volunteers. They do not let the non volunteers sign up until all the folks in the volunteer line have signed up, but it is possible that all slots will be taken before everyone who volunteered got a chance to register. Don't know that it has ever happened, but it's possible. Highly unlikely, but possible. It's a virtual guarantee, not an actual one.

I'm an 08 finisher volunteering at bike drop the day before to ensure a 14 spot.  Don't want to chance another online sign up, was lucky enough to get signed up that way in 07.  See you there and thanks for all that volunteer, the 08 volunteers were amazing being it rained relentlessly the entire day.

From the Ironman website: http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/ironman/lake-placid/volunteer.aspx#ixzz2LwFX7cGc

For 2013 we have started a SPEEDPASS Program to help fill volunteer areas in severe need of help. These are basically the evening run aid station shifts as well as Bike and Gear Bag Check Out. The SPEEDPASS is an extra reward system for those that help us out in these areas. The SPEEDPASS will entitle the volunteer to register for 2014 without standing in line Monday morning. SPEEDPASS volunteers will be given a wrist band and escorted by the Volunteer Director to register for 2014.

Wow! That's a nice deal. I was on the final run aid station last year. It was great, but being it was my very first IM to attend, I was *dying* to be down at the finish line that last hour.
