Pre-race routine:

Mostly I was worrying about how jumping in the lake when it was only 60 degrees out would feel. Walked 3/4 mile from the parking lot outside the park to the transition area.
Event warmup:

Well, I sorta just started the swim out slow. Swimmers swim to warm up, i just figured I'd count the first 100 meters. Does that count? :)
Swim
  • 12m 38s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Couldnt see anything in the water. Although I tried to start at the back to avoid croud, I still found myself getting hit a lot. Other than that and worrying about where I was at and going from time to time, the swim was pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Start at the side to avoid the mosh pit. Get tinted goggles.
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

There was a bit of a leg from the beach to the transition area. I timed this from when I stood up out of the water. Not sure if that is the right spot, or if most folks time when they enter the transition area. The race officially only tracks time out of transition area and throws it into the swim time. As this was my first time out, I did a lot of making sure i wasn't forgetting my helmet or oakleys. Sorta fealt like I was just staring dumbly at my bike and equipment. Should I sit down to put on my shooes or not? Did, no shirt. Did socks. put on the bike shoes and walked the bike out. Some folks ran in their bike shoes, but I had visions of rocks screwing up my new clipless system, so I sort of just sauntered.
What would you do differently?:

Consider trying the shoes on the bike thing. But the thought of dirt on the bottom of my foot when I'm riding doesn't sound that great.

Comments:

Not enough juice on the hills. Had to drop from the big chainring a few times. Got passed a good bit. They made it clear to ride over on the right to avoid a blocking penalty. Which I did. So, if someone passes you and six inches in front of you moves into your line and then just matches your pace - are you drafting? Seems wrong, but I would slow down a bit when a couple folks did that to avoid any issues.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

Stopped at the get off line before the transition area and took off those silly shoes. Then jogged in my socks to the rack.
What would you do differently?:

hmmm. dunno.
Run
  • 26m 29s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was tough tough tough. legs rubber from bike. 9:10 mile. Second mile better 9:00. Then I think I got help from that downhill to the finish to average a bit less than 9 minute miles. I sure wasn't worried about it being cold any more.
What would you do differently?:

nothing except try to run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

I forgot. My buddy was doing it with me and I finished a bit ahead so I ran to get the camera to catch him finish. Got a vanilla shake from Steak and Shake though. And starbucks was their with Frapps - nice!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique. Not enough miles on the bike to prepare. Swim to Bike Transition.

Great race! I'm signed up for the the Shelbyville sprint August 1. Glad to get the report. I have had many of the same issues as you. Transitioning out on the bike, I ran in my cycling shoes. Trust me, the shoes already clipped in thing takes practice. When you are overtaken by another rider, you must fall back and let them get ahead. O/W you could get a drafting penalty. I agree, it seems unfair but that's the way they do it. If you decide to pass that person, you must first let them pass, fall back a couple bike lengths and give it a go later. 74 degree water would have probably put me in my wetsuit(guess I'm a wuss though). Anyway, good race!!
