Was it an amazing, paradise of a race location?

I hear the current is a monster.  Watch this lady swim in it.

What's interesting is the main current (at least when I was there last March) moves the other direction. Must have been the wind...

Due to the geography of the shoreline, the swim location sometimes has an eddy that moves in the opposite direction of the prevailing current on the reef.  haven't done the IM, but volunteered for it and done a lot of diving there.

It's a great race and a great crowd on the run. Put it on your 'must do' list. Current was a bit of an aid the year I did it (2010) Race Report is here on BT as well. I might be going there this year as well.

I did it, and loved it. I can't imagine I'll ever do a swim in clearer water (our see dolphins jump to start the race?) Or bike in a more scenic course (I felt splashes from the waves crashing on the shore 10m from me!).

Crowd support was great on the bike and run.

I'd highly recommend the venue.

Issue for me was I was living in Chicago when I did the race and training until mid November is awful there when the first snow is in early October. I basically did all my training for the last 5 weeks on a trainer/treadmill. That part sucked.

I did the race and my wife went as my Sherpa. She has being begging to go back ever since. She had a great time spectating. We stayed at "The Palace" which is an all inclusive right near the finish line. The servers at the hotel set up tables on the street for her and her group of new found friend to cheer on the racers. Everything was perfect for her. We will probably go back this year.

The island essentially shuts down for the race. The bike is 3 loops around the island and the run is 3 out and backs so there is a lot of interaction between the racers and spectators. It seems like all of the locals are out on the street cheering and making a big party out of the race. It is a completely different atmosphere  then going to an area where the locals consider a race a nuisance that simply disrupts traffic flow

That would suck getting pulled in an IM after 30minutes...

Running through the center of town felt like I was leading a stage of the Tour de France. The crowd is going crazy and is right on top of you as you come running through. It has to be the best crowd supported race of all the Ironmans. Definitely a must do.

WOW! That video is pretty cool! If you watch the movement of the jet ski and swimmer after they stop them they MOVE ALOT and pretty fast away from the buoy...

Thanks guess I will work on my swim that much more!

I'm doing my first HIM in Sept in Cozumel, with a weeks recovery vacation after!!! This is my 50th Bday present!

Hope to see some of you there!

Hey great job IRONMAN!

Loved your blog report and thanks for sharing the "notes". (The longer your out there the drunker we get) I'm sure some of my party will be in that category!

So did you ever figure out the reason for your feet hurting so much?

Bug spray huh? This is the first I've heard of that, I will be putting some in my bag, I'm what you would call a mosquito magnet! I must taste like candy to them!!!

My boyfriend did in 2010. It was a great location spectator wise! We had a hotel on the bike course, which was great. And it was close to the run course, so I could see him pass, and then head back to hang out at the hotel. Easy spectating!

Lots of crowd support, since most people who are there are there for the race. The island shuts down on the race and the locals come out and cheer too.

My boyfriend was out on the run course late into the night, and there was this little old local lady still out cheering on the course. Don't see that at most races. Gosh, in Kentucky, we ran through many neighborhoods and the locals were all in their houses.

If you are OK with a flat, windy bike course... then it's the race for you!

Flat is good for me (Hills SUK!)  as for the wind I hope it takes a break...

Sunday is also the traditional family night out in the town square in MX.   Normally, Cozumulenos gather at the square near the ferry terminal that night for dancing, food, etc.  For the race they move the party down Melgar to the convention center area.

That's where we stayed. It was awesome! And the hotel catered to the athletes the morning of the race. Completely awesome. During the bike I was able to stand out front cheering and got served by waiters. It rocked!
