Pre-race routine:

Woke up down the shore at vacation house at 5:00 AM. Got up had a bowl of cereal and some water and Gatorade. Really was not happy with being down the shore. Very out of place. Packed the car, got the bike on the car, loaded the family up and drove up to Avalon. About 20 min drive.
Event warmup:

Got to the race and there was a long line to get your bike checked and inspected. Finally got that done and got the transition set up. Took the bike for a ride and felt great going north. Turned around coming south and realized there was one hell of a head wind. Ouch!

Racked the bike and went down for the swim start. Got in the water and man it was cold and really rough. Lots of waves and chop. I don't mind this all too much but the water was below 60. It was cold and without a wet suit whoo.

Made it in the water in the first wave. Was 4th out of the water in my wave. Came out of the water with the 3rd place guy and the others were only about 10 seconds ahead. Swim went fast. There was a massive gully in the first 10 yards.

Started way right of the first buoy with some other ocean lifeguards and wound up dead on the buoy marker. Perfect judgment because of the wind. Swam pretty hard to the last buoy and made a turn. Got killed by some huge swells and never really caught the big wave that I was looking for. But made it out right on the heels of the guy next to me that caught one. He didn't know how to get out of the knee deep water fast. That helped.

What would you do differently?:

Take it harder to the first buoy and not wait to see what others are doing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s

Feet were sandy and run from the beach to the transition area must have been at least a quarter mile. Had to go up the beach, through the soft sand, up the boardwalk and then down to the street and the parking lot. Ouch my feet were a mess after that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. There was nothing I could change.

Went really hard on lap 1. Wound up riding the entire race with the #1 finisher overall. We really pushed the pace hard on the bike. There were 2 guys ahead of us and we could not catch them. We help 32 MPH heading north past the transition. The crowd was great here. And about 22-24 on the back stretch in the headwind. Cornering and turns are what killed the avgs. Also navigating the slower riders was a real pain.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except maybe drink more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s

Not bad this time around. I knew who I was in with at this point so I was in no rush to get into a foot race with a 5:20 mile guys. I just made sure I had my shoes on right and got a drink and kept on moving.

Run was all the way back onto the beach and down through the soft sand and onto the hard packed sand at low tide.
What would you do differently?:

  • 19m 41s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 20s  min/mile

Long run very hot and humid. No shade as it was on the beach at low tide. Tough on the legs. Could not even see the turn around because of the humidity. Got to the turn around and was running in 3rd place after passing 2 guys. Felt really crappy and could feel the guy behind me coming like a SOB. I knew it was a matter of time before he ran me down. I just really didn't have that kick in me. I guess it may have been due to my lack of stretching and prep for the race. Vacation, etc....
What would you do differently?:

Take the run a little slower on the first half. Maybe held back and raced the stronger runner behind me.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch, cold cloth on my neck. Stretch and really did some light walking. Had some water, powerade, banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, not really comfortable because of vacation, not the right amount of pre race prep.

Event comments:

For the first year of this they did a great job. Tons of help at the race, very well organized. Great prizes for winners, steel band, plenty of great food. Great security for bikes. Just a great race. I will do this year after year. Loved it.
