I will be competing in my first triathlon this Sunday. My first attempt at a triathlon was rained out in mid-June. I have been training well as a complete newbie and I think that at the least, I will definitely finish this triathlon.

I think I put too much pressure on myself to do well and I need to learn to enjoy the experience. I have really enjoyed training with others and the comarderie tha comes with it. Training was going great until this week which is supposed to be my taper week.

I guess I feel like I haven't put the time in and feel a bit defeated for some unexplained reason. I think that the decreased intensity of the workouts have made me feel a bit like I've failed at something. But I've decreased my workouts partially because of the taper and partially because I overdid my weight training.

My motivation is a bit lessened and I hate that. But I'm probably just too hard on myself. My plan tonight is to go for a short bike ride and then do a short run and tomorrow I plan to do a 1/2 mile swim and then take the rest of the weekend off until the tri.

Thanks for listening.

Lot of us get taper-induced depression and self-doubt. It's normal, but usually unwarranted.

From your logs, looks like you're better prepared than a lot of first-timers. I'd suggest just relax and trust your training. What's the worst that can happen? Even if you DNF (and that's NOT going to happen! ) you've accomplished more than 90% of the population.

I second that.  I took a look at your logs... check out all those days where you fit in a workout with All Three Disciplines!  You're going to do great.  You're also going to have the added buzz of race day energy and adrenaline.

Thanks guys. I needed to hear that. It is good to know that there is such a thing as "taper depression"! I need to have a bit more self-confidence. And perhaps I should pay more attention to my short term goals of increasing my running so I'm not feeling so deficient with it.

And I am definitely hoping for a race day buzz to help me get through.

My new mantra is: just finish, don't pass out.

My new mantra is: just finish, don't pass out.

When people ask me what my goal is for my races, I always say "to not die."

You're going to do well.  You've done the training.  Take this week and rest and make sure you have everything together (check, double-check, triple-check).

It's natural to feel anxious.  You're embarking on a whole new experience in your life -- you're about to become a true triathlete!   When you get to the race site, you're going to see what everyone's raving about: IT'S FUN!  It's like a party, where you workout.  Most everyone is friendly and helpful and just as excited as you are.  If you want added support, see if the body marker will make a note on your calf to let others know this is your first race.  Some races around here put a big "V" under your age, so everyone knows you're a tri-virgin.  That way, they can give you extra encouragement.

Go.  Kick some serious @ss.

Tri-virgin.....that is something! I don't know if that do that here in our region. But I certainly will need all the cheers and support I can get!

You have trained and you are prepared. No fear.

This tri will be a nice challenge, but nothing you can't conquer.

You will be a triathlete come Sunday. No fear.

Sounds like the taper blues to me

Of course your first triathlon is going to be nerve wracking but once the first is over and you have experienced the experience (!) you will really be able to enjoy.

Good luck and just keep smiling

If this post ended in "BUT THEN I WENT AHEAD AND DID IT AND IT WAS GREAT!" I would believe it and be encouraged by it since probably everyone has a little self doubt except possibly ONEWORD. So, good luck, although I don't know what luck has to do with it, and have fun!

you will do AWESOME....just make sure to start hydrating ASAP if you havfe not and to pace yourself...you have trained enough to be able to finish the event, how fast is up to you.  Looking at your logs I have no doubt in my mind that you will finish your race....trust me, after the first one, you will feel exhausted, relieved, but overall, you will feel a great sense of accomplishment....

Go get 'em

I've had that "taper induced depression" for many other events and I definitley experienced it during my taper week before my triathlon. I just look at it as my subconscious mind's way of making me conserve energy. Just wait until race day though! You'll be flying high with all the excitement! Then after you finish your race...well...you'll see. It's pretty addicting.

Good luck! Look forward to your race report!

All I know is if Bear didn't say, "Look at your logs. You suck and Ride More." Then your is good shape and will do fine.

Congratulations - we all knew you could do it and you proved it by not quitting even when the going got tough.
It sounds like one horrid bike ride and that must have contributed to your run - but you made it. You are a triathlete and can now plan your next one and learn from your experience.

Well done. You should feel proud of yourself!

Jackie

It was a horrid bike ride for a beginner like me. I'm sure that others who did the race such as grvfrog, jcagg90 and CBarnes didn't think it was quite as horrid as I did! But it's my race and next year it can only get better. I need to find more hills in my area.
