Pro 9391 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: old cars or trucks you love? I still have a very fond place in my heart for my first car. I was 14 years old and saw a broken up car in a field behind a farmhouse. Front end all smashed in and the windows were busted out. It was a 1980 Z-28 Camaro that they apparently bought brand new for their 16 year old son and he crashed it two or three times in less than a year. I don't know the whole story, but either way it was just junk in their yard at this point. I offered them $800 for it and they agreed. It was all the money I had and I had my dad pull it home behind his truck on four flat tires. I spent every penny I made for two years and put it in that car. I took an engine class and rebuilt the engine, I signed up for an auto body class and fixed all the body work and painted it. I fully redid the interior. It was perfectly restored by the time I turned 16. It was definitely the best looking car in the high school parking lot. Sadly when I was 17 and in the Navy somebody smashed into it in front of my Dad's house and had no insurance. I only had liability insurance on it and couldn't bare to see it damaged. I told my Dad to sell it and he did. I never saw my baby again. I don't have a single picture of that car, but I could tell you everything about it to this day. Here's a picture I google'd that looks almost exactly like it did. I painted it corvette white and had the blue Z-28 stripes on it. I panted the grill black on mine though. |

She was sweet. Good times. |

Regular 5477 LHOTP | Subject: RE: old cars or trucks you love? Originally posted by tuwood Tony that is a great story, well, up to the it getting crashed into part. I want my kids to build/rebuild a car or truck like that. Such a cool experience on so many levels. I still have a very fond place in my heart for my first car. Expert 1951 | Subject: RE: old cars or trucks you love? My first car was a 1973 Buick Skylark. This model is a couple years older, but the paint job makes it look just like it. My brother worked for Radio Shack and he installed a new stereo system with speakers in the back. The wires visible running all over under the dash. My parents gave me WAYYYY too much freedom with that car, and I am surprised I survived the 80's. When I was 17 I slid into my best friend's parents car on a very snowy evening. I just barely bumped her dad's brand new late 80's model something, when I slid on ice at the bottom of a hill. Mine didn't have a scratch. Her dad's car had almost 2000$ worth of damage. |

Flip, how did you learn how to work on cars? Did you grow up on a farm? I don't have any digital pictures, but probably have some from back in the day I can scan at some point. I learned to work on cars, because I didn't have any other choice to get my cars working when I was growing up. Learned to weld from some old timers that were willing to help me. Then we had enough guys interested in cars that we helped each other and learned from each other. I live in a small farming community, but never on a farm. I have done my share of "beaning" and castration of pigs to help farmers out, but not a farmer. |

I really don't know much about cars and neither does my husband, but I would love to have my kids learn by working on a project like that. Actually, I'd still like to learn:) Here's an embarrassing, but true, tidbit, when I got my first car I didn't even know I was supposed to change the oil. Ugh, that's a lesson you learn the hard way. |

Pro 4277 Parker, CO | Subject: RE: old cars or trucks you love? The 72 Dodge Challenger has always been my dream car. When I was 17 shopping for my first car I found a 72 TA Challenger with 340 6-pack. I was with a friend we test drove it and I left to couple hundred bucks with the salesman to hold the car so until I could get my dad there. Even though I had saved the money for the car I could not buy it under my name because I was not 18. My dad drove the car, kicked the tires and I thought I would be cruising home in my shinny yellow Challenger with black racing strips. Then, out of nowhere my dad wants to look under the hood. He sees the 3 carberators and asks me "what the hell is this?". That killed the deal. We compromised and a week later I was driving a Plymouth Duster, which was a POS! |

Both of my daughter's learned to ride motorcycles with a clutch, and cars with a clutch, and they know where to check the car for all fluids before they take one down the road. They have learned how to jump start cars and how to change their own tires. Now that they no longer live at home, who knows what they remember. |

Regular 243 | Subject: RE: old cars or trucks you love? First car was a 66 Chevy II. Saw it in a yard while going to look at a 63 Chevy II that was sold earlier to my buddy up the road. The 66 was set up for the strip but I got it for $1200 in 1985 when I was 15. Dad made me tear it down and sell the L82 350, Muncie 4sp, and 12 bolt posi. Sold all that for $1000. Redid the floorboards, trunk, rear quarters. Cleaned up and painted the engine compartment, underbody, and anything else I could. Replaced the drivetrain with a 307, 350 turbo, and 10 bolt open end 308 rear. Plenty of power for starting out in a lightweight car. A few years later a bought a 68 Nova SS with a LT1, 4 sp, and 12bolt. Sold them both when I went to college. Would love a 55 chevy, old rod, or another Nova. |
