Age Group Rank = 3/21
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early, got my stuff together, ate a light breakfast and headed to transition. I helped out at the Towpath tent after my transition area was set up working on people's bikes.
Swim
  • 26m 42s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a bad swim for me. I was hoping to be in the 25 minute area. I swam very straight and sighted well. I found feet a few times but noticed those feet weren't swimming very straight, so I jumped off them and went on my own.
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Decent transition.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 28s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.65 mile/hr
Comments:

My back brake was rubbing for the first nine miles. I noticed it at the first turn around and then opened my brakes up more to fix the issue. That was frustrating. I probably cost me a little bit of time. Oh well though. I never felt great on the bike and my legs were really heavy. Average power - 272 watts. Normalized power - 290 watts
What would you do differently?:

Not have my brakes rub and not bike 250 miles the week before the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

I hate those wheel holder racks. I couldn't get my wheel in and the bike to stay up. I played with it for a good 15 seconds before I finally got it to stay.
Run
  • 37m 20s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I forgot my Garmin 910XT on my bike coming into transition, so I ran without it. I had no idea what my pace was or what mile I was at as they weren't marked on the course. I ran the entire thing by feel. That was a stupid mistake and made the run tough. Overall I felt like it was an alright run though.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my Garmin.
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a training race for me and I didn't taper at all. I put in a big week before it with lots of bike miles and some hard interval sessions. I would like to have finished top 3, but the focus is really being ready for Syracuse in three weeks.

Event comments:

There were not many volunteers on the bike course and it wasn't all that well marked. There were a couple of times I wondered if I had gone off course. The volunteers that were out on the bike course were also not really doing much directing. It is great being able to shower right at the college after the race before driving home.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
