Revolution 3
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 31m 13s
Overall Rank = 597/997
Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 21/47
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15 - suited up - put on race tattoos. Breakfast - steel cut oats, banana & molasses. Grabbed coffee in travel mug, gatorade and extra banana. Got to the park by 5:40 - lots of traffic-luckily knew a short cut and was parked and at transition before 6.
Event warmup:

Very warm so took my time before putting on wetsuit. Quick warm-up to test goggles and took gu about 20 mins before start.
Swim
  • 36m 1s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Could not catch me breath for the first 200m. Had to stop swimming and really try to assess the situation. Just could not get my breathing under control. Started again, very slowly and eventually got into a rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Would start a little further back - usually start mid front pack - this time tried starting in the front and just couldn't get my rhythm going.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s
Comments:

Was upset with swim so tried to get out of T1 as fast as possible. Had a little trouble getting my suit off.
Bike
  • 3h 25m 47s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.36 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a really good bike compared to last year - was hoping for a little more speed. Wind picked up last 20 or so which made me slow down a bit on the big descents. Passed a lot of people on the hills which felt really good. Stomach started feeling a bit queasy 2nd half. Should have switched to gatorade - think I needed more calories but was very focused on hydration.
What would you do differently?:

It's a tough coure and I really felt like this was one of my best rides-- not sure what else I can do beside climb faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Thought I was way behind so tried to get through as fast as possible
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 24m 37s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile started out great 8:45 with Hr around 147. Then my stomach wasn't feeling great and I just tried to keep pace till next aid station. Mile 2 took some gatorade and a gel and started to feel better - it was just off and on the whole run. Lots of people walking up the hills. My garmin started going berserk so I didn't have any time/pace info. I would run as much as i could till my stomach would act up then walk a bit - cool off- run some more. alternated between water and gatorade at the aid stations and took some gel in at mile 2 and mile 7. Pour lots of ice and water over my head and down my back. Humidity really just sucked the energy out of me but was able to get a steady run/walk throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - hard to acclimate to 90% humidity in 3 days.
Post race
Warm down:

Had cold towels at the finish. Wrapped that around my back and grabbed a burger and went straight to see my family at the lake. Threw my stuff down and went right into the water...felt great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Humidity - I just wilt. Had trouble getting a full breath all day so that definitely limited me. Hard to get in enough calories.

Event comments:

REV3 always puts on a good show.

Congrats on a tough course with hot and humid conditions. My Garmin read 91.2 degrees for the last hour of the bike.

Good luck with your training for IM Mont Tremblant. I will see you there!

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

Now, for the last 20 years I’ve always though that jogging seemed about as interesting as watching paint dry, and you know what? That’s how it turned out to be.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
