Boise, Idaho

World Triathlon Corporation
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 42m 45s
Overall Rank = 229/1278
Age Group = W35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/58
Pre-race routine:

This was a noon start… felt a bit strange.

We took the shuttle up to the start and tried to find some shade until it was time to watch the male pro start and stuff myself into a wetsuit.
Swim
  • 47m 28s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was horrible… first time ever vomiting in the water, struggled with sighting. The high winds caused some waves I'm not used to, although I love the cold water.
What would you do differently?:

If I am ever going to step this up I need to learn how to swim.
Transition 1
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

New wetsuit stuck a little. Thank God for young, eager wetsuit strippers.

T1 was long. Lots of running… some of it in bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn a faster mount on the bike… shoes on/off?
Bike
  • 2h 51m 9s
  • 90.12 kms
  • 31.46 km/hr
Comments:

Some good climbs and strong wind made this fun!
I felt like my bike and I were really working well. Hills were easy… kept the legs spinning. Was a little surprised that I was this slow.
Passed countless people… of course that's because they all swam faster than I did.

Realized post-race that I had the worst sunburn I have ever had on my back, despite putting on multiple layers of sunscreen. Looking to find another brand I'm thinking.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn how to corner a bit more aggressively.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

This went as smoothly as possible.
What would you do differently?:

Eliminate the need for socks.
Should have grabbed the 70mg from the bag.
Run
  • 1h 57m 53s
  • 21.08 kms
  • 05m 36s  min/km
Comments:

This is where it got away on me.

Went into the first 5 km holding down my planned pacing of around 5min/km… and then the heat-stroke kicked in… and I started stumbling.

It wasn't pretty… and nowhere near the 1:45 we had planned.
What would you do differently?:

Need to figure this out… not sure if it was nutritional, lack of training, all sun-induced, or a mixture of all the above.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Trevor… felt sorry for myself for a few minutes then went and tried to eat something.

We attended the post-race awards and low and behold I did it.
It wasn't pretty or a race I was proud of but I got that Las Vegas slot I was determined to get!
Going back again. Obviously have a few things to figure out between then and now.

Congrats on your Vegas slot.

What a difference a year makes with looking for shade before the start as last year folks where looking for any way to stay warm. That run can get hot but it sure is nice along the river.

That is a tough swim that a lot of folks struggle with. Vegas should be a piece of cake after this. Good luck.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
