Swim
Comments: This is still my weakest area, but I am getting better. This time I swam a mixture of freestyle and breaststroke. While I was still quite slow, it was over 3 minutes faster than my first triathlon two weeks ago. What would you do differently?: Swim more freestyle. Transition 1
Comments: The transition from the swim to the bike was almost 1/2 mile of muddy, rock and branch strewn, slippery trail that was all up hill. After watching many fall while trying to jog or run, I decided it was best to walk the distance and minimize my chance of falling and getting hurt. As such, I think I had the longest transition time in the Sprint. :-( What would you do differently?: If the trail conditions weren't so bad I would have run or at least jogged up to the bike. Bike
Comments: While my age rank was last, this was my strongest area and I placed in the top 100 people. I felt like it was a solid ride, but not my best. My time was a little slower than I wanted and I only averaged 16.4 MPH, with a top speed of 33.5 MPH. What would you do differently?: Try to maintain a higher speed consistently throughout the course, while taking better advantage of the downhill sections. Transition 2
Comments: Again, I took a lot of time, but compared to my first race two weeks ago, it was a nice improvement. I shaved almost 3 minutes of my time. What would you do differently?: Move faster! Run
Comments: Given my knee injury and the inability to train, I was fairly happy with my run. My per mile pace was a minute faster than the last race even though this course had many more hills than the Holliston triathlon. Other than one stop for water, I ran the entire time - just at a really slow pace. What would you do differently?: Try to keep a 10 minute/mile pace Post race
Warm down: Walked around and used my rolling stick. What limited your ability to perform faster: Still learning as this was only my second triathlon. I am also dealing with an injured left knee (meniscus tear and loose fragments) that requires surgery. As such, I can't run very much outside of the actual races. Lastly, I need to continue to work on my stamina so that I am not having to sustain a very high heart rate over the length of the course. Event comments: Overall I had a great time!! While my overall time placed my 123 out of 150 or so people, I still consider the race a great success. I beat my target time of 2:00 hours by 10 minutes and improved on my swim, run, and T2 times. I ran the event with my brother-in-law and neighbor and also had my family there rooting me on. It was a special moment when I approached the end of the race and my 9 year old son ran up to me, slapped my five, and ran the last 100 feet with me to the finish line - can't ask for better than that on Father's Day.
