Total Time = 1h 32m 18s
Overall Rank = 129/394
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 30/55
Pre-race routine:

Race wasn't until 9. Kid woke up at 5:30, we had some breakfast, loaded up the car, then I was off.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition, which was #99 and the BEST spot in the whole place. 20' from the bike out, close to the swim in and at the end of a row. Jumped into the water and did maybe 200 yards. Water was great temp, murky as hell, but nice.
Swim
  • 12m 53s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in the back because I still consider myself a bad swimmer. Gun went off and after about 30-45 seconds I was on top of everyone. 2 minutes later I was ahead of what appeared to be a lot of my wave since I caught up to the wave in front of me. Felt great, good breathing, good everything, then I hit the first buoy tight and took the turn. Only problem was I took about 1/2 as sharp of a turn as needed and I ended up in the middle of nowhere. A kayak had to chase me down a good 50-75 yards off course. Eff. I thought it was more of a rectangle course but it was a triangle, and the race announcer even called it a "rectangl-ish, triangl-ish" (his words, not mine) set up. So once I doubled back I was near the back of the pack I'm sure. Big mental eff up on what felt like a great swim.
What would you do differently?:

Stay near the buoy. I had plenty of contact the whole race (when I was online) and it didn't bother me at all. I think I can be a bit more aggressive with my line.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Since I didn't have time to buy a race belt I swam without a shirt and put my my bib # on my shirt and threw it on after the swim. Definitely killed some time. Felt like I moved ok besides that though. 92/394
What would you do differently?:

Get a race belt so I can swim in my tri-top.
Bike
  • 47m 20s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt good the whole way. I was passed by 4 people the entire time and the noise their disc wheels made I could hear from 30' behind me. I was back and forth with one guy for I'd say 12 miles of the race. I'd pass him on the hills and downs, he'd pass me on the flats. I talked to him each time, both of us enjoyed the back and forth. At the end we were neck and neck and we decided to push it a bit but I think he held off because once I took off I lost him. Bike pace felt good though. I felt like I was passing people at just a good speed for me, even some of their first lap while I was on my second. All in all I enjoyed the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Check my water bottle before to make sure it's working. Something was stuck in it, wasn't squirting right. Also I want to experiment with aero bars. Everyone who passed me was down low. At 6'6 I'm a god damn sail, if I could get down a little lower it might really help me out. Something to think about for the future.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Shoes out coming in, ran the bike to the rack, chucked the helmet off, already had my socks on so just put my sneakers on and grabbed a water and went out. Guess I could move a bit faster though. Might have to throw my zip laces in the shoes. 161/394
What would you do differently?:

I'd love to get tri specific shoes for easier in/out, but I think I moved pretty well.
Run
  • 27m 31s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Yuck. Haven't been able to run a lot since my hip acted up, so this was actually my first run in about 3 weeks. No pain the whole way, which was great, but I was moving slow as hell, which wasn't great. Got passed by quite a few folks, couple in my AG. First mile was super slow, after that I actually felt pretty good. Mentally my legs weren't there and I kept telling myself not to push it so I don't re-injure myself. At least that part worked. I felt a little under hydrated because I couldn't get enough water on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Run more. Bring a throw away squirt bottle for the start of the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water, some food, walked around and checked out the booths, then went home. I was flying solo all day so it was weird enough to just be sitting by myself, didn't need to sit around longer by myself.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm fine with the swim because it was my error, the bike was ok for what I'm expecting right now, the run though sucked. Really wish I was able to run more. There's at least 2-3 minutes I can gain on the run.

Event comments:

Great put together race. I think I'll add this to my schedule from now on. Tons of volunteers, really great on the bike course, easy registration and check it, great location in terms of parking and ease of getting in and out. Good transition set up. just a well done race all around. Very happy I did this one.

Great race sir! Way to go.

a shoelace is an easy (and cheap) replacement for a race belt

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

You’re probably not going to get it just right immediately. Like always, just do the best you can and keep on keeping on. Don’t get upset if you don’t hit the target every time.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
