Spruce Pine, North Carolina
United States
set-up inc.
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 34m 18s
Overall Rank = 45/81
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/10
Pre-race routine:

Drove from Hickory to Spruce Pine. Walked the 1/2 mile from the parking lot to the race site. Set up transition area

The contestant data is for males only. there were 35 females, 6 of whom were in front of me at the end.
Event warmup:

ran 1 mile; biked 1/2 mile to get the gearing right for start of bike leg which was uphill
Swim
  • 17m 26s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

crazy swim course. very short with only two waves so there was a lot of overlap. this is the first I have done with a running start and also the first I have done with a double loop. lots of banging the first lap, but the second I had plenty of room for swimming. The first lap I did not feel like I got into a groove, but the second one felt better.
What would you do differently?:

try to not let the crowd distract me as much as it did. train for speed.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

it felt longer than the clock shows. had some trouble getting the socks on. the ground was rocky and I didn't want to sit down, but probably should have
Bike
  • 52m 31s
  • 14.3 miles
  • 16.34 mile/hr
Comments:

this course was one of the main reasons I did this race. Hills. I concentrated on my heart rate and never let it get out of the 150's. Probably could have pushed harder, but felt like I got what I wanted out of it. My odometer showed it as 14.78 miles and the bike was not on the ground other than beyond the dismount line.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

can't complain about this time.. 11th fastest of the race
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 21m 41s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

great run. I felt like I was out there closer to 23 -24 minutes. Really enjoyed the trail part of the run. Different and fun. The hills on the back part of the course were harsh, but again this is why I came to do this race.
What would you do differently?:

At the time, I thought I could run faster, but I am not sure that is the case.
Post race
Warm down:

stretched a little. walked bike back the 1/2 mile to car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the hills. but that is why I came here. this is basically a training brick for Duke Liver. I may have been able to push more on the bike, but what would that have taken away from the run? I will find out more at Bandit's Challenge

Event comments:

Great time. The swim is a little strange, but overall a good race. Will try to make this one again.
