Pre-race routine:

First triathlon ever so no routine to follow but tried to stick to my normal pre-half marathon routine.

Event warmup:

Arrived early set up transition ran through my T1 and T2 routine which I flubbed up. Did the pre race swim water was OK, I had swam the course the day prior. Then just waited my turn to go....
Swim
  • 13m
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 36s / 100 meters
Comments:

7:39 start 7:39:25 large gulp of lake water; feed the fish? don’t feed the fish, feed the fish? don’t feed the fish...
Kinda expected about 10 min but @13 was not as bad as I thought it would be based on my perception of a VERY SLOW swim time…
Had to do some serious Brain control during the swim! Guess I should practice swimming and puking more often or stop gulping lake water…

Put cloth tape "lanyards" on ear plugs worked like a charm

What would you do differently?:

More OWS... Was told the swim was short which holds true to my perception of a VERY SLOW swim that is not reflected in the time.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Set up at bike out due to speedplay cleats and not wanting to run in them. Put shoes on in T1 Spent some time to rinse feet and put on socks for bike and run. Also put on sun sleeves due to sun/skin issues.

Bike course right turn out of T1 quick U turn 50-100M's maybe so would have been hard to get into shoes did it in T1

What would you do differently?:

Sun sleeves are a pain but necessary new ideas?
Average it went as planned but could be faster...
Bike
  • 43m
  • 13 miles
  • 18.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Should have left second water bottle just extra weight and drag.
What would you do differently?:

loose 20 lbs fat is extra weight and drag! Short race so not worried about pace. Did it hurt my run? maybe...

Tighten my shoes I knew about the hill and could not "pull up" on the assent.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Unbuckled shoes before T2 feet popped right out and ran to T run shoes on and ran off WITH helmet ON!!! BIG Dope!
back to T to drop helmet...
What would you do differently?:

Take helmet off.... pretty seamless just practice. T1 and 2 more.
Run
  • 33m
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 36s  min/km
Comments:

Being fat does not help! Weight loss will help this area more than anything! Speed work is going to be a must I have ran at a "pace" for so long I need to relearn how to make the legs "go" faster...
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim;
Lack of OWS experience and race pace effects on heart rate and breathing rate.
Bike:
Tri bike? Not in the $$$ cards yet...
Run:
Fat is hard to carry loose weight!

Event comments:

Enjoyed it! More to come; will rerace this course in Aug so I will have a good comparison on my fitness level and preparedness.

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.
