Pre-race routine:

Woke up, ate a cliff bar and drank some gatorade and water.
Event warmup:

Easy jog around the start line to try to keep warm, the morning was a bit chilly ~45F surrounded by beautiful mammoth mountain. I was feeling good when I woke up trying to stay calm, once I arrived at the start line my stomach started feeling woozy and bloated. Tried using porta potty but it did not help.

Comments:

I tried to watch my pace as a matter of fact I started slower than normal knowing the altitude was going to kick my ass. I stopped to pee at mile 2 which made me feel a lot better and got into a nice rhythm. Previous to the race my longest ride was only a 5 mile run, so after i hit the big hill on mile 7 anything was a bonus for me. I walked up the hill to try to save some energy, continued running until mile 10.5 then I jogged and walked. I came up an another hill on mile 11 which I also walked, I tried to continue walking and running as we were running on the cross country skiing path which was a bit hilly, or at least seemed that way perhaps due to the lack of training and elevation, the last couple of miles were terrible but I pushed through and finished what I considered a decent time considering the elevation and lack of training.
What would you do differently?:

Train properly, although this is my 8th or 9th HM I can't seem to find the right pre-race meal, maybe is just my nerves or anxiety. Since I live and train at sea level nothing much i can do there to get ready for such high altitude.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the finish line a little, got chocolate milk, a bagel, cream cheese, orange and a pice of chocolate. Got on the shuttle back to our hotel and hit the hot tub.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Insufficient training and altitude.

Performance: Below average
Course: First 6 miles were down hill in which we were running past 3 or 4 lakes very beautiful, came up on one of the bigger hills on mile 7 then it flatten out for a few miles, there were also a couple of rolling hills but doable. At mile 11 the next big hill came followed by rolling hills that were a little more challenging than the earlier one, I supposed it was do to the fact that we were running on the cross skiing trail, the finished line was right in the hart of Mammoth with the last 0.4 mi running a small incline which seemed like a mountain.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
