Shawnee, Kansas
United States
Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department
70F / 21C
Total Time = 1h 08m 16s
Overall Rank = 44/279
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 8/23
Pre-race routine:

The usual breakfast - coffee, eggs, and a banana.
Event warmup:

Approx 150 yard swim + 15 minutes of shivering.
  • 08m 2s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards

I had every intention of swimming on the outside to get some clear water, but got stuck on the inside. I accidentally swam over a couple people that I failed to see (sorry, and please don't hate me).
What would you do differently?:

Should have broken to the outside from the beginning to stay out of traffic.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s

Long uphill run to T1. Wasn't worth the risk of a flying mount, because IM Louisville is 6 weeks away.
What would you do differently?:

My run up the hill was disappointing. I am dealing with an achilles injury, and didn't have much of a choice to run slow.
  • 27m 20s
  • 8.98 miles
  • 19.63 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s

Got lost for a moment, and lost a lot of time putting on a neoprene ankle brace.
What would you do differently?:

Memorize my location in transition. There was a giant alphabet letter at the end of each rack, so there was really no excuse.
  • 29m 30s
  • 3.25 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile

Disaster of a run. My injured achilles reduced me to a walk on uphills. I also had pinching sensations around the injury the last 1/2 mile, and had to walk some of that too.
What would you do differently?:

Should not have raced injured.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Most of those thinking about tackling a long swim instinctively feel it’s necessary to Do much to build endurance - more yards, harder laps. But a focus on Receiving is ideal for long distances.

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
