Sunny
Total Time = 7h 15m 10s
Overall Rank = 1292/1469
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 74/90
Pre-race routine:

Up early, got dressed, HEED to drink, oatmeal and a half a banana. No nuts or vitamins.
Event warmup:

Set up transition and a 30 min walk to the swim start (great warm up).
Swim
  • 45m 54s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a chance to warm up. It was a very hard swim and everyone else had trouble navigating so I spent a lot of my time watching for people cutting across me of swimming on top of me. There was really nothing that you can use as sighting as the buoys were on your right and the waves were pushing you into them.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe swim further outside of the pack.
Transition 1
  • 06m 56s
Comments:

Transition was so crowded and long.
What would you do differently?:

Run to my spot.
Bike
  • 3h 31m 52s
  • 90.12 kms
  • 25.56 km/hr
Comments:

My bike felt slow from the beginning and I couldn't get my watch setup properly at first. I must have had low rear tire pressure. Then I got an official flat with 10 miles left. I had never changed a flat my my self. I was slow but got most of it done before the SAG truck came to help me finish. Also there were a lot of fast men passing and it was frustrating.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe double check the air pressure before the race. Practice changing tires for speed.
Transition 2
  • 05m 1s
Comments:

The transition was VERY long and narrow and I was racked at the very far in so I has to walk with my bike and shoes for most of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Run with my bike.
Run
  • 2h 46m 17s
  • 21.08 kms
  • 07m 55s  min/km
Comments:

This was a very boring run. Many people passed me as well and that got me frustrated along with knowing I was not going to PB with that bike ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not let a flat get me frustrated.
Post race
Warm down:

I cried because I was frustrated. I left as fast as possible

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad luck.

Event comments:

This was a very hard year for this race, maybe next year it will be better.

You are way too hard on yourself Tracey.

You combatted the waves and finished your swim in high standing. Then to flat and finish as well as you did (for the low tire pressure would have slowed you down and taken a big toll out of both your biking and running legs) is the big story. A story of victory.

From the point of view of enduring a harder than expected contest, you performed amazingly well. I would take that as a HUGE personal victory and I'm proud to have been a wee part of that. You went way beyond my expectations.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE TRACEY!

That was a tough swim for sure! I did the same thing letting my poor swim time get to me on the bike. Hard to let go, but that is what we must do!

Congrats on staying tough and finishing with the bummer of a flat! Well done!!!

Swim wasn't too bad if you trained for it. The swells made it easy to sight. Just look at the top of the swell and see the entire sight line. I've been swimming in the big lake for a few weeks so I was use to the conditions. I think we were spoiled last year with teh smooth glassy water.

You should always always practice changing flats. I know it's not rocket science but you want it to be second nature so you can focus on calming yourself down. My last flat took just under two minutes to change (Front tire). But I practiced it a lot. At least you got up and rolling and it's really really tough to remain calm when you mount back up. You want to make up the time, but it just doesn't work that way in a HIM.

Good job gritting it out on the run and finishing.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
