Well, I took your advice and hired a swim coach to check things out and he has really helped me get my stroke mechanics down. I just had my best swim ever in the pool so feeling very encouraged. On a funny note, while I was swimming several days ago a man in his seventies was swimming in lane next to me. We struck up a conversation after workout and he gave me some advice. He told me to hum and count to three as I am exhaling under water. I know, I know... I thought the same thing - this guy is nuts. Well, what do you know, I tried it and my breathing is 100 times better! I dont know if I wasn't fully exhaling or what, but when I hum while exhaling and count to three, my breathing is much, much better. Now that everyone is having a great laugh at my expense....

I love your post!

I've been swimming most of my life, but I still hum every now and then! It absolutely works and will often just help me settle down a bit.

I actually hum a song... "Do Wah Diddy Diddy"

Keep up the great work!

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

Triathlon serves up many humbling moments. The most humbling of days came not during a race day but by email. I had been invited to participate in the Rambling Rose Women’s Only Triathlon. Wow.

Swimming and golf can both present you with a meditative-like form of exercise that I have found to be both fulfilling and fun!

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
