Age Group Rank = 1/15
Pre-race routine:

Hit the snooze button twice and had to rush to get there (made it by 7:05). I had a cup of coffee, Snickers marathon bar and banana on the drive. Picked up my chip and claimed a spot for my transition.
Event warmup:

Went for a short jog down the boardwalk...less than a mile total. Grabbed my goggles and went for a warm-up in the water. Funny term (warm-up) considering the water was probably 70-72 and I wasn't using a wetsuit. Spent maybe 5 min stroking around just trying to get my swimming muscles ready to go.

Comments:

The swim basically sucked. Standing on the beach things didn't look bad but between the cold and the waves the swim was just kind of crappy...and that was the general consensus. It wasn't particularly rough and they had us going with the current but I justwasn't feeling it and I used a combination of swimming, duck-diving, and walking/striding (chest deep) to get there. You had 2 main options...swim way out off the beach or stay a reasonable distance from the beach and get rolled every 5-10 strokes.
What would you do differently?:

Practice swimming at the oceanfront instead of the bay I guess.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No splits for transition but I was in and out quick...maybe 30sec.
Run
  • 22m 7s
  • 3.7 miles
  • 05m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt decent on the 5k considering I did 15 miles in the hills yesterday and had 1k of beach running and the swim (if you could call it a swim) leading into it. I probably could have knocked another 10-15sec off my run but there wasn't anyone to catch over the last 800m so the motivation to really kill myself wasn't there...although I still finished strong.

Ocean swim practice and general conditioning on the run.

The chip timing only got your total time so I don't have any specific splits for the swim. I'm estimating 15:00 based on my total time and knowing my 5k split.

Performance: Good
I took my own 5km split 18:07 (5:51/mile) but didn't bother to get mile splits or my 1km beach run split.
Course: This event was supposed to be a 1km run down the beach, 1km swim back and then 5k run. Due to the strong current they changed it to a 1km swim, 1km run back on the sand to transition, and 5km run. The distances were the same but all the running was together rather than being split by the swim...that was fine with me. The 5k run course is a 2 loop out-back on the boardwalk...boring but short enough that it didn't matter.

I can't really compare this race to last years because the order of events was different, conditions were different and the competition was likely different.  With that being said, I finished 2/12 AG and 12/137 OA last year compared to 1/15 AG and 5/126 OA this year.  The only valid comparison I can make on time was the 5k run since that course was exactly the same...ran 18:07 this year compared to 18:54 last year.  There was a good head/tail wind this year but we ran equal distances with and against it so that shouldn't have been too much of a factor overall.  Okay, enough analyzing...bottom line is the swim sucked but I'm happy with my performance considering the last few months of my life.  Looks like the recovery is on the right track.

Nice job; great to see you racing again and with a great 5K time. The bay was choppy on Fri so I can only imagine what the ocean was like.

Holy Moly. OK, apparently I've been a bit out of BTouch, but I thought you broke your hip or something! I can see you've recovered nicely and are back out there kicking .

Good for you!

Congratulations on a rock solid race.
