Subject: RE: New (9-yr old) Triathlete! Originally posted by dbrook1Originally posted by Left Brain There you go! Nice work! Don't know if she'll progress like yours have LB, but she gave 'er hell. We went over turning onto her back during the swim if necessary, shifting down on the bike but trying to keep the legs moving, and it being OK to walk on the run. She said she touched bottom twice on the swim (1 due to not being used to the "cold" and 1 due to a back up); she never stopped pedaling on the bike and never dropped below 3 of 6 gears on the hills; never walked once on the ru.n. My favorite during "training" was working on when to shift on the bike. We were nearing the top of a hill and I told her she should shift from 2nd down to 1st. Her response: "No Dad. I've got this!" Absolutely awesome and still makes me chuckle thinking about it. All that matters at her age is that you are out there with her.........seriously, that's all. If you live in an area of the country that has Ironkid races think about looking into it to see if she's interested. It's a great environment and the distances are really age appropriate. My kids loved it. There usually is an adult race the same weekend at a lot of the events..... you cheer for her, then she cheers for you....they love it! Keep it fun, make it play time......that's the only worthy advice I have. I envy you....I'd gladly start over with them it's been such a hoot...enjoy! |
