Sunny
Total Time = 2h 46m 43s
Overall Rank = 102/315
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 22/33
Pre-race routine:

Usual breakfast
Event warmup:

200 yard swim
Swim
  • 22m 55s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Physically, a nice swim. I registered late, so i had weave through the slower swimmers. Also, I swam over to the 2nd lap buoys after my first lap and had to correct. I added 75-100 meters to my swim. Airhead mistake.
What would you do differently?:

Register early, and focus on my course
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

I need tri shoes! Most of my transition time was me trying to put on my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Tri shoes, and running mount.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 56s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.13 mile/hr
Comments:

A lot of hills kick my arse! I feel i am working way too hard on the bike leg, and thus, my run suffers.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down, and better pace myself so i have legs left to run on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Again, my shoes were the big culprit. Took forever to take off.
What would you do differently?:

Really time for some new shoes!
Run
  • 1h 03m 25s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Absolutely terrible run. Worst ever for me by a long shot! I attribute this to me trying too hard on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

pace myself on bike
Post race
Warm down:

Walk it out and drink water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My legs were not ready for this

Event comments:

The most organized race that I have attended this year. The hilly course was painful. This is my first Oly, and I learned a lot.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
