81F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 38m 39s
Overall Rank = 147/382
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 21/55
Pre-race routine:

Up around 5:15 - slow moving this morning - typical breakfast of oatmeal and Dt My Dew - got a late start and headed over. Parking was a mess and made the wisest choice of the day - parked down a side road I know well and road my back into the race. Quickly got my chip and markings, setup on transitions
Event warmup:

Did about a mile warmup run and a little swim - hit the bathroom while the first waves went off - we got a late start
Swim
  • 17m 7s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

The outbound swim (with the current) felt good. First two buoys went really well but got trapped coming in - could not find a good spot or rhythm. Drove me nuts. But happy with the swim. A minute slower than last year but it was a much tougher swim - tons more people and traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I have been suffering a case of tendinitis in my right elbow (tennis elbow) which has made swimming painful. This was the first swim in 2 months that did not hurt
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

Thought I was faster - had some trouble with my shoes.
Bike
  • 51m 9s
  • 17 miles
  • 19.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Interesting ride - slower than last year but felt strong - played hop scotch with one guy while passing a bunch more; had a guy literally draft off me for 2 miles up Shearers - never seen someone do that. More frustrating is he beat me overall as I did all the work.

The last mile was super technical and very hard to pass. I could have passed a few more but played it safe.

Passed two cars as well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Big TA but decent transition
Run
  • 26m 32s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 17s  min/km
Comments:

Well the run - i Passed one person maybe?- been running a bunch but none of it fast. Since my 5k PR in early July the running side of the house has been grim. 23 seconds slower than last year.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with a few friends and met some new ones

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The summer since early July has been a mess training wise for some very good reasons. Struggled mighty in late July early August with both injury (see the elbow) and just motivation. My goal for the race was to be close to last year but I was over 4 minutes slower. I think some of that was do to the headwinds we saw on the bike and more to me. But I am thankful for completing the race and having the ability to race.

Event comments:

Race felt bigger than last year - looks like it was maybe 8 to 10% bigger. Weather was great.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
