I had only swam 1 time in the last 2 months so overall I was happy with this time.

More swimming leading up to race.
Transition 1
  • 03m 34s
Bike
  • 3h 14m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I spent 3 hours in the ER the previous weekend with a stomach virus and severe dehydration and had a sinus infection most of the week. I felt good until I hit about the 40 mi mark and then i was drained. Up until that point I was on pace for my goal time but I knew it was going to be just about finishing from there.

Comments:

nothing major
Run
  • 3h 03m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Was able to run the first mile and then it was a lot of walking. Walked most of the first half. Tried to jog the downhills on the 2nd half but had a hard time keeping HR down.
What would you do differently?:

This was the best I could do after being sick all week leading up to it.
Post race
Warm down:

sat in ice bath for about 10 minutes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

being sick/severely dehydrated all week leading up to race.

Event comments:

They put on a GREAT race. I didn't participate in any post-race activities so I can't really comment on that.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
