Subject: Ready for 50k?
Hello,

I was planning on trying to qualify, again, Nov 3 at the R2H in Toronto. I'm following a sub 3 hour marathon program and subbing a rec5/6 run here and there with a Sufferfest video.

Aug 4 I did my first HIM distance with a 5:04:15.

May 5 I went to Toronto to qualify and bonked half way through due to a bad cold and dumb fast start. Ended with a 3:27:55. Had my 1:31 split on target, as my qualifying time is 3:05 (24 year old).

I am logging 100-110 kms a week running, following a sub 3 hour marathon plan, do I have what it takes to do a local 50km race instead of shelling the cash out to fly and race in Toronto (I'm from NS).

My 20-22 mile long runs are going well and I hold a 7:45-8:00min/mile pace.

I'll be venturing to Montreal to do a marathon Sept 22 as a warm up. This would give me 3 weeks taper for the 50k.

Thoughts? And tips on jumping from 26 to 31 miles?

You've got a solid base, you can definitely do the distance.

The thing that might be harder for you is slowing down. The longer you go, you need to slow it a bit. Not a ton, but since you didn't make your qualifying pace in the marathon, you probably won't make it for the 50k.

Is it on trails or road? If it's on trails, you'll be even slower.

I don't think there's much you can or should do to make the jump other than getting used to running at a more comfortable, 'easy' pace. You've got the base, it's just 5 more miles. Honestly, I think you can do the 50k without doing the marathon 3 weeks before. As long as you focus on recovering between the two, you should be fine. I would highly recommend not running the marathon hard either. Think of is as a slower training run.

Good luck!

In addition to the awesome spot on information above, don't just "wing" the nutrition aspect of an ultra.  really pay attention to it as that comes into play even more than the marathon distance.  More than you would think anyway!

Have you already looked at which Ultra you want to do? There's a big difference with each event. I did the Dances with Dirt: Run through Hell 50m as my first Ultra and it was pure madness (and fun). Others are strictly on well groomed trails.

As it's been said here already, find a comfortable pace and figure out nutrition. You'll be able to take a hydration pack with you and you'll carry some food items and the like.

This is a whole new adventure and personally think it's a great compliment to the multisport lifestyle.

Just one more thing to consider - with a marathon you *could* easily get lost and unofficially run an ultra (anything longer than 26.2 miles)... why not shoot for the 50 miler?

50 miler? I'm crazy, not insane!
Lol. maybe another year though.

The 50k is on a marathon route with the extra 4k out and back 1/2 way through. So lots of water/aid stations and all on pavement with gravel shoulder.

I am running Montreal Sept 22, plan to use it as a long training run. I would like to do it in 3:20-3:25 which will be a PB but no where's near qualifying.

Thanks for input on nutrition, will be keeping a keen eye on intake and plan thoroughly!

Ran Montreal marathon yesterday.
Was hoping for a 3:20. Forgot garmin at hotel in Bostom prior night. Ran with a Walmart timex

1:35 split, felt good, told myself go fast and try to hold it to qualify (<3h5m)

Finished 3h1m59s
No garmin for pace. I still can't believe it. I didn't taper as my plan was to taper next 3 weeks for ultra.

I think I'm ready for the 50K! Just at the 1:35 1/2 pace or slower though

I just signed up for my first ultra - the Seashore 50K in Virginia Beach on Dec 21 - after completing my first IM last week. My run volume nor pace are near yours; our team's training for the IM marathon never got above 15-16 miles. This will be an interesting one for me. I haven't run on trails in forever, nor have I run a standalone marathon. But I like new challenges.
