Age Group Rank = 3/23
Pre-race routine:

Since this was a Thursday afternoon race and I had never done it before, I showed up early to get my packet and set up transition. It was at this point I realized I forgot my orthotics, so I jumped in the car and sent the next 50 minutes going back to get them. I still made it back in plenty of time. There was no reason to get there too early, as it turned out that they assign transition spots totally by race number, to the individual spot on the rack where you are at.
Event warmup:

Short bike ride to get pedals and shoes all set, and then did a few hundred yards in the water.
Swim
  • 13m 12s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

Once again, due to my inclination to start too far on the outside, I was a little far out for most of the race. Didn't cut it close to the buoys, and ended up a bit outside on the final stretch, probably costing me 20 seconds or so. Feel like I probably could have pushed this a little harder, but hadn't been swimming as much after my last race.
What would you do differently?:

Start more to the middle, push a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Took too long to get into shoes once in the bike, but otherwise this was good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 36m 23s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.45 mile/hr
Comments:

Kept coughing all the way through this, never felt like I was going at my best. Didn't hit the hills as well as I should have, and my legs just felt tired out there. Wasn't a bad ride, but certainly not one of my better ones.
What would you do differently?:

Keep riding more until the season is truly over.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Good as always.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 26m 12s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

As normal, this was my weak link. My legs felt pretty toasted for some reason, when I actually expected to handle this better. It could have been the hills, I'm not sure. I tried to not pay attention to who was passing me, as I couldn't tell who was in my heat and who had started in the heats in front of me. Eventually I latched on to a woman who passed me and was determined to keep pace off of her. Normally I think I would have been faster than her, but I just couldn't go...still coughing and spitting some. Stayed with her until passing her at about the .5 miles to go mark. I was cramping up in the final .1 miles or so, and she passed me with a burst of speed right before the finish line. Good effort by her. I was just glad to have her to hang on to for a couple of miles, otherwise I might have fallen farther off.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure on this one. Probably have my lunch earlier, as that might have contributed to my cramp.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched out and watched the finishers, waited for the awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Didn't focus the same on training after the Ludington race, wasn't specifically ready for this event. Also, didn't do a good job with having a late lunch for an evening race!

Event comments:

They give bottles of wine to the top 3 in each (legal) AG! I got a bottle of merlot for holding off the 4th place guy by 10 seconds!!! Nice race to close out the season with!

Not bad at all on that run considering your PF issues this season.  And solid swim/bike times.  You have officially beaten my fastest course time by about four minutes Cry  Good work on snagging the coveted wine bottle award!

They say in a sprint that every second counts - and I see that's true here, as you bagged the bottle by 10 seconds!  Nicely done!

Great race to end the season - even if it didn't feel that way, the results are very solid.

Congrats on the podium!

Awesome job!

As for the woman at the end? Maybe you can just out-plank her at the gym or something Wink

If I would've had a pair of pants like yours, I would've probably won the whole thing. Or if I was following those pants of yours, I would've set a new course record. haha

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Fall's also the time to shop! In fact, now's the best time to retool some of your triathlon equipment for next year, right before the Christmas season begins to jack prices upward.
