Do you mean checkmate white in 1 or white mates black in 1? I don't think you can mate black in one. But black can mate white with Nxc3# Edited by Kido 2013-10-11 4:17 PM |

Member 5452 NC | Subject: RE: Chess Question You're playing white, your turn and objective is to put black in checkmate in one move. If this is a trick question, I will be pleased. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Chess Question Can't be done. I was thinking it could be one of the "trick" mates like under promoting to a Night or something and get them in a smothered mate. I think they made a mistake on this. Black mates in one though. Edited by Kido 2013-10-11 4:25 PM |

Cool. It's a beginner worksheet, so I doubt it would be anything fancy. Really don't know what that means, but we'll keep that between us. Thanks. Edited by Goosedog 2013-10-11 4:28 PM |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Chess Question Gotcha......I was trying to figure out who the hell moves their kings all over the board....but if you are correct, then the board was set up wrong to begin with....unless you want me to believe that both queens moved across the board and each king moved once to the left. I think Goosedog should stick with chutes and ladders. Edited by Left Brain 2013-10-12 4:11 PM |

You can pick up an older version for cheap-- like Chessmaster 8000. The "older" versions are still devastatingly good. As a kid, I started playing computer chess and improved very quickly. The computer just never makes mistakes like most casual players will so you learn not to make stupid mistakes either. I'd also recommend chess.com for live play. There are thousands of players all over the world on this site and you can get a game any time you want. Edited by zed707 2013-10-12 4:46 PM |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Chess Question Since black mates in one pretty easily, and this is a beginner level question, I figure that's what the problem was supposed to be. They probably worded it wrong. Probably should have read Mate white in one, or the like (mate in one, black to move)... I also like chessmaster. They had a LONG learning program/tutorial that goes with it. I may disagree with the other post that some of the lower level computer players DO make stupid mistakes, probably at the same rate a real person would. The trick is to recognize them and exploit them. I used to play on FICS (free internet chess server). I think I got my rating to over 1400 at one time, which is pretty bad. Seems the like the players improve exponentially past that. Playing a 1500-1600 level player is worlds above a 1300-1400. I used to read books and study trying to get better. I think it's just a wonderful game (if not the best). It's easy to learn but hard to master. I'm personally at a plateau of some sort. Can't seem to get better. I'm missing some "trick". I think it's being proactive AND reactive at the same time (defense AND offense). I tend to play too defensively and never advance to slowly get picked apart by better players. OR, focus on attack and leave something open. I tried to learn "go" but that seems even harder! (the Chinese strategy game, not the card game!) |
